The lychee season prevails in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia currently. The Centre for Food Safety of Hong Kong reminds the public that excessive consumption of lychee may cause "lychee disease". The centre experts advised consumers not to eat lychees on an empty stomach, but also to control the amount of lychee consumption. The average adult should not eat more than 10 lychees per day. Children should not exceed 5 lychees.

According to the Facebook page of the Centre for Food Safety, there are studies claiming that lychees contain two natural chemicals: Hypoglycin A (Hypoglycin A) and Methyl-cyclopropyl-glycine (MCPG), which can inhibit human body production glucose. There have been cases of hypoglycemia after lychee consumption in mainland China and India. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, convulsions, or blood pressure drop. In severe cases, life threatening may occur. Young children have less hepatic sugar reserves. If they have an empty stomach, their blood sugar is already low. Eating a large number of twigs may cause convulsions, coma, and even death.

5 suggestions for eating lychees
For safety reasons, the Centre for Food Safety recommends that you pay attention to the lychee:

1. Purchase lychees from a reliable store.
2. Wash your hands before eating.
3. Gently scrub lychees under running water before peeling and eating.
4. Control the amount of lychees per meal: The average adult should not exceed 300 grams (about 10 lychees) per day, and children should not exceed 5 lychees each time.
5. Do not eat on an empty stomach.
