Hong Kong reports sixth death from covid on 23 June 2020

Prince of Wales Hospital announced that a 72-year-old male patient infected with covid passed away early this morning of 23 June 2020 and is the sixth dead patient in Hong Kong. According to the information, the patient lives in Luk Chuen House, Liyuen Village, Shatin, and is the second resident of Luk Chuen House who died from covid.

The old man suffered from diabetes and hypertension during his lifetime and lived with his wife and daughter in Luk Chuen House. He submitted a sample of deep throat saliva on the 1 June, which was negative for the virus at the time, but he had a fever in the afternoon of 3 June, and was sent to the hospital by an ambulance in the morning of 4 June. Another deep throat saliva sample was taken in the emergency room. The viral diagnosis is positive.

The patient developed inhaled pneumonia and acute renal failure on 9 June. He needed 100% oxygen to assist in breathing, kidney dialysis and the use of artificial lungs (ECMO). He was the second covid patient in Hong Kong to use ECMO. He had used protease inhibitors (Kaletra), but he was discontinued due to renal failure and later received interferon medication. The patient had received an infusion of cardiotonic drugs and died at 2.19 am on 23 June.

Hong Kong has a cumulative number of 1131 covid cases on 23 June 2020. With the additional death, there are only 77 active cases while 1078 patients have recovered and discharged.
