Hotel Clio Court, the hotel facing directly the front of Hakata Station East, is the most expensive yet most convenient hotel in Fukuoka. Each big room has a large tub and a big bed. It connects to Fukuoka airport in five minutes and to Marine World in 30 minutes.
A double bedroom costs from 98 Singapore Dollars.
The hotel has two restaurants and a cafe. Breakfast is at the western restaurant which serves intercontinental options featuring soups, bread and eggs.
The reception at Hotel Clio Court Hotel is staffed 24 hours, providing dry cleaning services and safety deposit of valuables. Ironing services are available and a trouser press can be borrowed. Luggage storage services are available before check-in and after check-out.
On the top of the hotel, one may be able to spot aircraft approaching Fukuoka airport during the day.
Access to Hotel Clio Court is via Exit 15 of Hakata Station.
Other tourist attractions in Fukuoka
Canal City Hakata, centred around a 180-metre canal, includes Canal City Theatre, a 13-screen movie theatre, a futuristic amusement park, hotels, stores, restaurants and daily street entertainment.
Bayside Place Hakata is a waterfront complex of shops and restaurants featuring a large columnar aquarium. This is the departure port for Hakata Bay cruises and for ferries to the nearby islands Iki and Tsushima (from Hakata Port). To travel to another Japanese island Shikanoshima and Busan, depart from Hakata International Terminal opposite.
Yatai are mobile food stalls that open in late afternoon and early night serving Hakata ramen (Chinese noodles in rice pork soup) and oden (vegetables and fish simmered in light fish broth).
Hakata Machiya Folk Museum is a Hakata history museum depicting the lives of Hakata people from 1868 to 1926. Admission is 200 Yen. Opened from 10 am to 6 pm, entrance is stopped at 5.30 pm.
Hakata Riverain, accessible from Nakasu-Kawabata Station Exit 6, has a theatre, a hotel, shops and restaurants. On the seventh floor is Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, when opens from 10 am to 8 pm (last entry at 7.30 pm). Admission is 200 Yen.
Hakata Traditional Craft and Design Museum, five minute walk from Gion Station, is located next to Kushida-jinja Shrine, the oldest shrine in Fukuoka that is founded in 757 with its present structure dating back to 1587.
The traditional craft and design museum features Fukuoka's woven textile (Hakata-Ori) and dolls (Hakata Ningyo). Exhibitions, workshops and lectures are held in the Gallery Room on the first floor. The second floor mainly focuses on the textiles and dolls, explaining their history and manufacturing methods.
Sumiyoshi-jinha Shrine is dedicated to the guardian god of sailors. It is restored in 1623.
Temples in Fukuoka are located in Hakata. They include Shofukuji Temple, Japan's first Zen Buddhist temple built by a priest Yosai who returned from China after four years of study to introduce Zen Buddhism, and Tochoji Temple, completed in 1992 and houses Japan's tallest wooden Buddha image at 10.8 metres tall.
Tenjin in Fukuoka is its principal commercial centre with a large number of shopping facilities amidst offices and ancient shrines. Check out Tenjin Chikagai, an underground mall which runs past the subway station entrance. In the western part of Tenjin is Tenjin West Street, Fukuoka's answer to Orchard Road, while in the eastern part is ACROS Fukuoka, an information and culture centre covered with a terraced garden which descends into the adjacent Tenjin Central Park.
