Gama Melon, a multidisciplinary research group from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) of Indonesia, has achieved their first milestone since its foundation in 1949. Two varieties of Gama melon, namely the Hikapel and Meloni melons were successful in obtaining Plant Variety Protection (PVT) from the Ministry of Agriculture and also receiving PVT certificate.
Hikapel melon began to be developed since
2012, while Meloni was developed in 2014.
Hikapel melon, that has an orange flesh, has a distinctive sweet taste and fragrant aroma. This type of melon is rich in beta carotene content. In fact it has the highest beta carotene content for all orange fruit fleshy melons while Meloni is an oval fruit with a sweet fruit flavor and scent.
Since it was successfully created in 2012, Hikapel melons have been successfully marketed in the Superindo region of Yogyakarta from 2014 to 2015 and Carrefour in Central Java in 2017, and at AEON BSD Serpong in 2016. Currently, the Hikapel and Meloni melons are marketed limited to premium products, and exclusively at UGM, as well as souvenirs for domestic and international university guests.
The breeding carried out
on Gama melon is not a genetic engineering product, but instead uses a
molecular genetic approach for screening the stability of phenotypes and
inheriting the expected superior character.
Budi as one of the Gama
Melom Team Researchers, said, "The development of Gama melon
research has been initiated since 1997 and until now it has succeeded in
creating 16 varieties of melons, 11 of which have obtained a Certificate of
Registration from the Ministry of Agriculture and thank God two of which were
finally PVT certified".
Budi said he would not stop his research to obtain PVT rights in the types of melons or other commodities that were being developed. It also opens opportunities for cooperation that the Indonesian horticulture industry wants to do for these two types of melons.
