At a time when the US-China relationship has deteriorated, high-level officials from both sides held closed-door talks in Hawaii on the 17th. However, the communiqué issued by both parties afterwards showed that the talks did not achieve actual results. US Secretary of State Pompeo and Yang Jiechi, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Communist Party of China said their own words. Yang's visit this time is fruitless.
Reuters reported that a senior US State Department official said that the meeting between the two parties in Honolulu, Hawaii, began shortly after 7 pm on 17 June and ended at 1.50 am on 18 June. The talks lasted more than 6 hours.
After the talks, a US State Department spokesman said that Pompeo emphasized the interests of the United States and the need for "fully-reciprocal dealings" in the business, security, and diplomacy of the two countries.
Pompeo said that the United States and China need to share information completely transparently when fighting the covid epidemic. Previously, he had criticized the CCP authorities for not transparently disclosing the epidemic information and preventing the international expert group from entering China to investigate the origin of SARS-CoV-2.
Xinhua News Agency reported that Yang Jiechi and Pompeo stated their respective positions on US-China relations and international and regional issues of common concern, and agreed to continue to maintain contact and communication.
The outside world believes that it can be seen from the communiqués of the two parties that the talks have not achieved any results.
A senior Hong Kong publisher and famous writer Yan Chungou recently wrote an analysis saying that the CCP is tough on the lips and guilty in heart. Yang Jiechi's "home visit" is actually asking the United States for mercy. Since the CCP has served softly, it proves that the United States' tricks work. If it works, the United States will not waste this opportunity to fight the CCP.
He analyzed that Yang Jiechi must have made a trip in vain. It is impossible for the CCP to withdraw the national security laws, and the sanctions of Americans will be fulfilled one by one. Hong Kong people will have a hard time, but the CCP will dig its own grave step by step.
At present, the United States has a tough attitude toward the CCP on issues such as the handling of the epidemic and the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law. US President Trump has publicly accused the CCP of hiding the epidemic, causing a worldwide disaster.
Regarding the CCP’s attempt to implement the National Security Law in Hong Kong, Trump clearly pointed out that the CCP’s move violated the Sino-British Joint Declaration and would turn Hong Kong into a "one country, one system."
It is worth noting that on the day of the US-China official talks, President Trump signed the Uyghur Human Rights Act, authorizing Washington to sanction Chinese Communist Party officials who persecuted Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Some analysts said that Trump's move was a warning signal to the Chinese Communist Party. Once the Hong Kong version of the National Security Act is implemented, the United States will impose severe sanctions on the Chinese Communist Party and Hong Kong officials. Trump signed the Hong Kong Bill of Rights at the end of last year.
Pompeo's attitude towards Beijing has also been relatively tough. He once accused the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law for sounding the death knell for Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy and strongly urged the Beijing authorities to reconsider.
Pompeo also said that he would stand on the side of Hong Kong people.
The Communist Party of China pushed the Hong Kong version of the national security law to encounter unprecedented strong resistance. On 17 June, the G7 foreign ministers and senior representatives of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and senior representatives of the European Union pushed the "Hong Kong version of the National Security Law" issued a statement urging Beijing to reconsider this decision.
The statement pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party's move does not comply with the "Hong Kong Basic Law" or the international commitments under the principle of the legally binding "Sino-British Joint Declaration" registered with the United Nations. The "Hong Kong version of the National Security Law" will seriously damage the one country, two systems and Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy.
