The world's first self-driving energy storage train, developed by CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CRRC), rolled off the assembly line in Zhuzhou, Hunan on 22 August 2020. The train will operate at Kunming Changshui International Airport, with a maximum capacity of 500 passengers and a top speed of 70 kilometres per hour.

According to reports, the train has a total of 7 cars, using three sets of 60,000 farad high-energy super capacitors, which can store 80 kWh of electricity. It is currently the largest single super capacitor in China. When the train enters the station, the charging of the vehicle is completed while passengers get on and off the train. When fully loaded, the straight road can run for more than 5 kilometres on a single charge, and the endurance capacity is greatly improved.

In terms of energy saving, the train adopts pure super capacitor power source. The super capacitor device can absorb braking energy, and the energy recovery rate is greater than 85%, realizing energy efficient, recycling, environmental protection and energy saving.

This train is also China's first energy-storage tram with automatic driving mode, which can effectively save manpower, improve the operating efficiency of the airport rapid transit system, and meet the needs of all-day airport operations.

In response to the individual needs of airport lines, the entire vehicle adopts a 100% low-floor design, no steps in the passenger compartment, no longitudinal slopes, and a spacious standing area and humanized luggage rack are specially designed. Wide lighting strips are used in the vehicle, with a large area. The side windows are spacious and bright, with a wide view, which enhances the comfort of passengers.

In appearance, the train adopts deep to light green, highlighting the characteristics of "Spring City" Kunming. The ceiling of the carriage adopts LED lights with blue sky and white clouds, which make people feel like being in spring. With the completion of the renovation and expansion of the terminal building of Kunming Changshui Airport, energy storage trams will shuttle at the airport to welcome Chinese and foreign guests.
