The Department of Microbiology, Li Ka-shing School of Medicine, University of Hong Kong said on 26 August 2020 that its team has discovered a new broad-spectrum antiviral strategy against new coronavirus and other viral infections. A broad-spectrum antiviral peptide, P9R, can fight at least six respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus. The team believes that this discovery has important implications for the control of emerging virus infections.
Zhao Yangjun, a member of the team and a research assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology, University of Hong Kong Li Ka-shing School of Medicine, said in an interview with a reporter from China News Service on 26 August that the team has been studying similar peptides since seven or eight years ago.
Zhao Yangjun said that P9R is currently a new broad-spectrum antiviral agent and has not been used in clinical treatment of patients. The team hopes to develop it into a broad-spectrum antiviral drug, which may be able to treat covid or new viral diseases that will appear in the future effectively.
According to a press release issued by the Department of Microbiology, Li Ka-shing School of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, the research results were published in the international scientific journal Nature Communications on 25 August 2020.
The study showed that the defensin-like peptide P9R showed effective antiviral activity against acid-dependent viruses, including the suppression of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus, avian influenza A H7N9 virus, and coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, MERS coronavirus and SARS-CoV) and rhinovirus.
