Republican National Congress of the United States
The Republican National Congress of the United States was held from Monday to Thursday (24th to 27th) local time. President Trump was formally nominated on 24 August 2020 at the Republican National Congress to represent the party for election on Monday.
According to the second-term governance vision announced by the Trump campaign team on Sunday with the theme "Fight for You", Trump will elaborate on his future governance priorities at the party conference, including eliminating the covid epidemic in the US, creating jobs, and ending the United States’ policy against the People's Republic of China. No former Republican president or former presidential candidate is seen at this party's convention. The remaining family members and conservative allies endorse him.
Trump speaks every night
Trump is also preparing to break the tradition and will make a speech every night. The conference hopes to create an atmosphere of "optimism and hope", claiming to be different from the "sullen and dissatisfaction" of the Democratic conference.
Republican Convention involves people on the spot
Affected by the pandemic, last week's Democratic National Convention was almost all held online, but some activities of the Republican Convention will still involve people on the spot. CNN quoted people familiar with the matter as reporting that Trump and Vice President Pence are attending the conference in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday, when 336 party representatives have voted to formally nominate Trump and Pence as candidates for president and vice president.
Family cronies support Trump amidst concerns about the finale climax
Trump camp senior adviser Jason Miller said on Sunday that audiences will be able to hear Trump's speech at "different times every night", but did not elaborate on whether it is a live speech or a pre-recorded video. Trump camp advisers told CNN that some staff questioned Trump's decision to make his appearance every night, believing that if he became the focus every night, the climax of accepting the nomination on the last night would diminish.
Miller said that the Republican Party will present an "optimistic and hopeful convention" this week, which is completely different from the Democratic convention last week that was "filled with a lot of dissatisfaction." He said that the Republican Convention will focus on Trump's achievements in the past four years and outline the vision for the second term.
The Trump campaign issued a statement on Sunday to announce the list of speakers at the party conference, and emphasized that the four nights of the conference "will pay tribute to the great story of the United States and the Americans who wrote it, as well as commending Trump for his "Make America Great Again", "How does the agenda make them successful".
In the speaker lineup, at least one Trump family member will appear every night, including his wife and children, eldest daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka. The White House emphasized that Ivanka attended the conference as an individual and did not violate federal laws prohibiting civil servants from participating in political activities.
Meanwhile, Trump will deliver an acceptance speech on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday.
