SARS-CoV-2 may have evolved from the Yunnan coronavirus in 2012

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

Image : Any coronavirus causes lung diseases and kills if there is no treatment. Whenever a new coronavirus appears, it is called "novel coronavirus". In the People's Republic of China, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is classified as a type of pneumonia. Hence, it is officially named "novel coronavirus pneumonia". However, many mainstream media have confused disease with virus and treat COVID-19 as a virus. StayGate has renamed COVID-19 as covid, short for coronavirus disease and covi in short for SARS-CoV-2. Researchers from a non-profit biotechnology research institution in New York found that a paper published by a Chinese doctor in the early years showed that China had discovered similar SARS-CoV- as early as 2012. The novel coronavirus that caused the current pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 (covi, in short), probably evolved from the coronavirus eight years ago and leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The Sunday Times of the UK also reported in July 2020 that six miners were infected with an unknown virus eight years ago.

Novel coronavirus in Yunnan in 2012 killed three miners

According to The New York Post, researchers from a non-profit biotechnology research institution in New York once pointed out that a master's degree thesis published by a Chinese doctor named Li Xu in the early years showed that in April 2012, six miners at a mine in Mojiang, Yunnan, China, developed severe pneumonia after cleaning the bat excrement in the mine, and three of them died quickly.

At that time, Dr. Li Xu participated in the diagnosis and treatment of these six miners, and found that these miners were all infected with a new type of coronavirus that had not been discovered in the past. The symptoms are very similar to covid. The doctors' methods of treating miners at the time were similar to the current methods of diagnosing and treating patients with covid. They even consulted Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, remotely.

According to the report, Li Xu later sent samples of the novel coronavirus to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The researchers of this research institute in New York believe that it is very likely that the early novel coronavirus have evolved into the virus SARS-CoV-2, and the current global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 is likely to originate from Wuhan and leaked by WIV. This argument is gaining more and more support in the American scientific community.

In early July 2020, the British media "The Sunday Times" also reported the case of six miners infected with an unknown new coronavirus in Yunnan, China in 2012.

According to the The Sunday Times' report, between spring and summer of 2012, six workers experienced high fever and cough while working in an abandoned copper mine in Yunnan, and were diagnosed with severe pneumonia.

The medical staff performed virus and antibody tests for these workers who were infected with severe pneumonia, and then discovered that they were infected with an unknown new type of coronavirus. So, they reported to the relevant state agencies.

The WIV P3 laboratory then sent a team of researchers to Yunnan to collect virus samples. After research, the RaBtCoV/4991 coronavirus was discovered.

After the Chinese Communist government announced that a large-scale pneumonia outbreak caused by a new type of coronavirus had occurred in Wuhan in January 2020, Shi Zhengli, a coronavirus expert at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, published a report in a foreign medical journal in February this year, claiming that it caused the outbreak. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has a similarity of up to 96.2% with the "RaTG13" coronavirus sample discovered by the institute in Yunnan.

The Sunday Times reported that the “RaTG13” virus sample mentioned by Shi Zhengli in the report is almost certainly the “RaBtCov/4991” coronavirus collected in the abandoned mine in Yunnan.

Reported and questioned: Is it possible for the RaTG13 virus or similar viruses to evolve into the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and spread widely among the population after infecting the staff of Wuhan Institute of Virology?

The article lists two diametrically opposed views of virus experts.

Firstly, Australian virologist Edward Holmes believes that it takes 50 years for the RaTG13 virus to evolve to match SARS-CoV-2 100%, so it does not support the latter. He does not support the argument that SARS-CoV-2 evolved from RaTG13.

However, Richard Ebright, an expert at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University in the United States, pointed out that the former statement is based on the assumption that the virus changes at a constant speed. If the virus changes its host and adapts to the new host, its evolutionary efficiency may become very high.

He believes that if the RaTG13 virus has infected humans before November 2019, then this virus will have enough time to find and adapt to an intermediate host, adapt and become SARS-CoV-2 that causes the global pandemic of COVID-19.

Shi Zhengli, Wang Yanyi and Dr Yan Limeng  differ on SARS-CoV-2 origins

Shi Zhengli revealed to the journal Science most recently that it is highly possible that SARS-CoV-2 may be transmitted by one or more than one intermediate host to humans. Though it is 96.2% similar to RaTG13 coronavirus which she detected in one of the samples that she collected in Mojiang Cave, she argues that the Yunnan chrysanthemum horseshoe bat does not carry SARS-CoV-2 and thus covi evolved from RaTG13 is only theoretically possible, not factually proven.  She even said that WIV has not destroyed any virus samples including RaTG13.

Shi Zhengli claims there is no virus leakage or personal infection accident in WIV. She replied, "The virology research and experiment activities carried out by the Wuhan Institute of Viology are carried out in the corresponding biosafety laboratories in strict compliance with international and national biosafety laboratory management and experimental activity management requirements. Among them, P3 and P4 laboratories are very strict from facility to management. For example, scientific researchers must wear personal protective equipment, the air in the laboratory must be efficiently filtered before it can be discharged, and waste water and solid waste must be sterilized by high temperature and high pressure. The whole process of experimentation activities carried out by experimenters will be monitored by biosafety managers through video. The facilities and equipment of the laboratory and the implementation of the biosafety management system must be supervised and reviewed by the relevant professional departments of the country every year, and the operation can be continued after passing the review. The virus institute's high-level biosafety laboratory has been operating in a safe and stable state. So far, there has been no pathogen leakage or personal infection accident."

In contrast, Wang Yanyi, Director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, publicly denied that there were live samples of the RaTG13 coronavirus in the Wuhan laboratory. However, Dr. Li Xu, who participated in the rescue of Yunnan miners eight years ago, said that he would find the type in Yunnan. The samples of the novel coronavirus were sent to the WIV, which shows that Wang Yanyi may deliberately conceal the truth.

In the US, only Yan Limeng appears to challenge the argument that covi is derived from the coronavirus carried by the Yunnan chrysanthemum horseshoe bat.

Yan Limeng confers people to find out how the laboratory owned by the PLA had modified Zhoushan bat coronavirus. In one of her interviews on Steve Bannon's War Room Pandemic, she said the PLA laboratory modified Zhoushan bat coronavirus but how it was modified she does not have the answer for the audience at the moment. She said she will later reveal her scientific team report to the public.

Yan Limeng urged experts to find out how Zhoushan bat coronavirus was modified to become SARS-CoV-2. She also said that the PLA laboratory is any laboratory owned by the Chinese Military Academy of Sciences including WIV and the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute (HVRI). The Chinese Military Academy of Sciences is managed by the PLA and Chen Wei from HVRI of the Chinese Military Academy of Sciences has taken control of the P4 laboratory in WIV.
