A new study on the genetic mechanism of flat peach flat fruit shape conducted by Wuhan Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences confirmed that flat peach originated in China. This research not only has theoretical significance for cognizing the formation of mutational traits of fruit trees, but also provides support for the improvement of fruit shapes of peach and other fruit trees.

The flat fruit shape of flat peach is controlled by a single gene located at the S locus on chromosome 6, but its genetic mechanism has not been known before. The research of the Molecular Breeding Group of Fruit Trees of Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences found that the reversal of the position of the large chromosome downstream of the S locus up to 1.7Mb is the genetic basis for the flat fruit shape of flat peach.

Research leader Han Yuepeng, a researcher at the Wuhan Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that genotyping the S locus of wild relatives of flat peach found that chromosome inversions exist in Xinjiang peach. This result not only confirms that flat peach originates in China, but also provides important evidence for the inference that "Xinjiang is the origin of cultivated peach domestication".

Relevant research results have recently been published in the international academic journal "Journal of Plant Biotechnology".
