US Secretary of State Pompeo announced early this morning (January 7) that the US Ambassador to the United Nations Kraft will visit Taiwan. The US Mission to the United Nations has previously expressed support for Taiwan’s return to the United Nations.
Pompeo issued a statement in the early hours of the 7th, condemning the Hong Kong government for mass arrests of pan-Democrats. He also announced that Kelly Craft, the US ambassador to the United Nations, will visit Taiwan. However, the specific date of Kraft's visit to Taiwan was not disclosed.
Pompeo said that Taiwan is a reliable partner of the United States and a thriving democracy. Even if the Chinese Communist Party tries to weaken its success, Taiwan still prospers and "shows what a free China" can achieve.
On September 16 last year, Kraft invited Li Guangzhang, the highest-ranking Taiwanese official in New York, to a lunch, which she called a "historic" meeting.
This is the first interaction between a high-level official from Taiwan and the US ambassador to the United Nations. Kraft said that President Trump worked hard to strengthen and deepen bilateral relations with Taiwan, "I want to continue to maintain this relationship on behalf of the government."
She said that Beijing has marginalized Taiwan and that the voices of 24 million people in Taiwan need to be heard.
The next day, US Undersecretary of State Keith Krach visited Taiwan. He is currently the highest-ranking US official visiting Taiwan.
When Kelly Kraft participated in the Heritage Foundation, a conservative American think tank, in December last year, he said that Taiwan is a true force for good in the world. The government is in sharp contrast.
The Chinese Communist Party and Russia were elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council in October last year. The United States criticized the Human Rights Council for embracing the dictatorship and failing to achieve the purpose of defending human rights.
Kraft said, “If you want to find examples of serious human rights violations, China (the Communist Party) will do it.” She criticized the composition and organizational direction of the UN Human Rights Council and disappointed her name.
She called on countries with similar ideas to the United States to promote the reform of the United Nations Human Rights Council and not allow countries with poor Human Rights Watch records to join.
Last May, the US delegation to the United Nations tweeted support for Taiwan’s return to the United Nations. The tweet said: "The prohibition of Taiwan from joining the United Nations is not only an insult to the proud Taiwanese people, but also an insult to the principles of the United Nations." The CCP representative expressed "strong indignation and resolute opposition."
