According to the official Weibo news of the Information Office of the Xinjiang People’s Government, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Health Committee reported that the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region reported on 18 July 2020 that there are 12 new cases of asymptomatic infection of covid, all in Urumqi, all of whom are under centralized medical observation.

As of 18 July 2020, there are 17 confirmed cases and 23 asymptomatic infections in Xinjiang, all in Urumqi, and a total of 269 people are currently under medical observation.

Of course the above official covid tally of Xinjiang is understated. An anonymous Urumqi audience member told Declassified host Li Dayu that Urumqi has more than 20 covid cases on 15 July 2020 but the local health commission has only reported 1 exported covid case to Hangzhou on 16 July and the city immediately ordered suspensions of subway services and flight cancellations.

According to mainland and independent Chinese news reports, Urumqi has been under lock down condition since 17 July 2020 while small communities were initially mandated under closed down management since 16 July for a week to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
