Yuan Guoyong, Chair Professor of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, said in an interview with the British BBC on 27 July 2020 that officials in Wuhan, Hubei, did indeed conceal the epidemic of nover coronavirus pneumonia (covid).

In the interview, Yuan Guoyong said that he discovered the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in a family in Shenzhen on 12 January 2020. The cluster infection in the family means that the virus has spread from person to person. He immediately reported the discovery to Beijing officials, but the vast majority of Chinese people did not learn about the human-to-human transmission of the virus until at least a week later.

Yuan Guoyong said, "I have experience with confirmed cases in Shenzhen. I know how fast the virus can be transmitted, and I know it is from a hospital. I know that (virus) can accompany people on flights to cities thousands of miles away. "However, the CCP has not yet issued a warning to the WHO and other countries.

Yuan Guoyong also visited Wuhan on 17 January 2020, accompanied by Zhong Nanshan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Gao Fu, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. In this interview, he stated that the Wuhan authorities not only destroyed the physical evidence, they are also "sluggish" in processing clinical findings.

He said that they had visited the Wuhan Huanan Seafood Market, which is regarded as the source of the epidemic, but the market has been completely cleaned up, just as the "crime scene" has been disrupted and the virus host cannot be identified. "I really suspect that Wuhan is covering up the epidemic. The officials were supposed to announce the information immediately, but they failed to do so immediately."

Yuan Guoyong once published a signed article in March, indirectly and severely criticizing the CPC Central Committee’s foreign propaganda after the outbreak of the epidemic, which became a target of public criticism. Later, he wrote an article in the Ming Pao in April to criticize the authorities’ anti-epidemic measures as "No See The coffin does not shed tears," and was pressured by the authorities again.

In June, he and his team calculated based on samples returned to Hong Kong from Hubei Province and pointed out that the actual number of infections in Hubei Province may be as high as 2.2 million, which is 32 times the official data. The CCP's official media "Global Times" criticized Yuan Guoyong for this, saying that he was cooperating with the United States to attack China.

Wu Qiubei, the chairman of the pro-CCP Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, also posted on Facebook to question Yuan Guoyong’s research, saying, “He can estimate that 2.2 million people are infected with more than 400 samples. Based on this calculation, the population of 1.4 billion Chinese is not 5,300. Ten thousand infections?! With such an astonishing number, the mainland can still be so peaceful, and work resumes one after another. It really is not to demonize the Communist Party, but to deify it!"
