The South African authorities reported on 19 July 2020 its covid epidemic data showed that there were 85 new deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 5,033.

South Africa is the most industrialized country in Africa. The first case was confirmed more than 4 months ago, and it has become the country with the worst epidemic situation in Africa so far.

According to statistics from the South African Ministry of Health, there were 13,449 new confirmed cases in a single day, and the cumulative number of cases reached 364,328. The epidemic is expected to reach its peak in the next few weeks.

South Africa began to implement strict blockade measures in late March this year, but has begun to gradually unblock it to prevent economic collapse.

According to a report released by the UN Economic Commission for Africa on 17 April  2020, citing a model from Imperial College London, it is stated that even in the best circumstances, there may still be 300,000 deaths from the CCP virus in Africa Diseases and more than 122 million people have been diagnosed. In the worst case, the number of deaths could reach 3.3 million and 1.2 billion were infected.

Experts warn that either scenario will overwhelm Africa's generally fragile and underfunded health system.
