On 23 July 2020, after the US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo delivered a blockbuster speech on "The Future of Communism China and the Free World" in Orange County, he met some overseas Chinese pro-democracy activists. Wei Jingsheng, a well-known Chinese dissident who was one of the invitees, said that Pompeo stated this time that "the United States will confront the CCP for a long time" and said that there will be more severe sanctions against the CCP.

Pompeo made it clear in his speech at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in California that now is the time to form a new democratic alliance with like-minded countries to defeat the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party. The Secretary of State said that the change in US policy towards China is not to choose between the two countries, but to choose between freedom and tyranny.

Wei Jingsheng: The United States recognizes and supports the Chinese democratic movement

Regarding Pompeo’s recent speeches, Wei Jingsheng said in an interview with Epoch Times that the Chinese people on the Internet were cheering. “Some people are worried about whether the U.S. policy can continue, but Mr. Secretary of State explained this in detail. The policy is not a short-term policy, but a policy that lasts for decades. Moreover, he also emphasized two or three times that this policy was not made by a single person or organization in the United States, but a report by several organizations that has the party’s support. This is very important, and it shows that the entire United States has waken up."

Wei Jingsheng said that this is a great encouragement to overseas democrats. He said, "In the past 30 years, many friends have made a lot of efforts (to fight for democracy in China), but they are not confident enough. The main reason is that the previous governments are pro-Beijing. But this time everyone is particularly encouraged. Now that we have such a high level, we have to fight against the CCP’s dictatorship."

Especially through dialogue with Pompeo, Wei Jingsheng said that the US government now recognizes and supports the democratic movement in China. He said: "Pompeo's general meaning is to completely change China's system, to help the Chinese people, to stand with the Chinese people, and to help change China's one-party dictatorship."

Closing the Consulate General of CCP in Houston, not afraid of retaliation

During the process, Wei Jingsheng said that some people also mentioned that the United States ordered the Chinese Consulate in Houston to close within 72 hours. Pompeo’s answer to this matter was that the United States discovered that the consulate had done a lot of illegal things, and the United States had many reasons to close it. Although it is also known that the CCP will retaliate, the United States has also decided to do so.

"Pompeo said that over the years, China needs the U.S. far more than the U.S. needs China, so the U.S. may have some losses, but the U.S. is willing to bear these losses and will stick to it. Even if the CCP removes all the personnel from the U.S. Embassy, The U.S. policy will not change." When asked whether Pompeo revealed what sanctions the U.S. will take next to the CCP, Wei Jingsheng laughed and said it was not convenient to disclose.

But he said: "As a vague statement, Pompeo also expressed the view that there will be more severe measures. We can wait and see."

Wang Dan: Pompeo's speech is a turning point in US China policy

Another invited leader of the 1989 student movement, Wang Dan, told The Epoch Times reporter that he believes that Pompeo himself is very firm against the CCP. This speech is a very important turning point in US China policy.

Wang Dan said, "Over the years, the United States has adopted a contact and moderate policy toward China, and it has not caused any changes to the Chinese Communist Party. We humans cannot wait for the Communist Party to change itself. Of course, we have to put such great pressure. So the United States is now making such a major adjustment to the policy is just like what the Secretary of State said: We must protect the people and also protect the democratic system. As Chinese, we are very happy and grateful. Other countries care about us and hope that we can have a good system."

Wang Dan also said that the United States is now leading the entire Western world, fighting against the CCP, and pursuing complete regime change. But China and the United States will not cut off all kinds of exchanges. If China becomes a democratic country, the United States will become good friends with China. So the current policy is not to sever ties with PRC, but to target the dictatorial CCP regime.

Clarify the difference between China and the CCP

Pompeo revealed in his speech that the Communist Party is always lying, and the biggest lie of the Communist Party is that it claims to speak on behalf of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. But Mr. Secretary of State said: “On the contrary, the CCP’s fear of the sincere opinions of the Chinese people is greater than its fear of foreign enemies.”

Lin Peirui, a sinologist who participated in the meeting, said: “The United States and Pompeo stand on the stand of the free world and oppose totalitarianism. The biggest change today is to stop calling the other party China and the Communist Party. This is very important. This is because all the time, whether it is American politics, newspapers, academia, and business circles, have made this mistake. They are talking about China's interests and opinions. In fact, it is not the opinion of the high-level Communist Party, not the whole of China. Here, not only Pompeo, but also, everyone from the White House to the Congress and the State Council say that unified, which is very good."

Song Yongyi, another professor at California State University, Los Angeles, said that Pompeo’s speech represents the view of the US government that if the free world does not solve the CCP’s problems, the free world will be resolved by the CCP, and it is indeed in crisis. Time is up.

Song believes that the U.S. government used to be confused about the concepts of the CCP and China, but now they finally understand it. He said, "I have experienced five presidents in the United States. This is the first Secretary of State who knows so clearly. When I say this, I think it's the right thing to do. American leaders are open-minded, able to accept reality, and learn from reality. It is a very good start to draw realistic conclusions."

Recently, the U.S. reported that it was planning to ban CCP members and their families from entering the U.S. This triggered a new wave of quitting the party. Wei Jingsheng added, "Someone mentioned this to the Secretary of State at the meeting, saying that many people are coming to quit the party. He laughed and said that specific policies are still being formulated. He said it vaguely, but said about it. I will definitely do it."
