The outbreak in Xinjiang, China continues to spread. Online video shows that construction of the shelter hospital in Urumqi has started, and Yining, the capital of Ili Autonomous Prefecture, was officially closed on the 27th.
On 25 July 2020, a video posted on WeChat in mainland China showed that in an open area far away from the building, multiple excavators and construction vehicles were digging. A person in white clothes also appeared on the construction site, carrying his hands on his back to watch the construction of the vehicle. A suspected on-site worker spoke in peculiar Mandarin, saying, “Urumqi square cabin hospital is under construction,” and also mentioned “contributing to the country”.
After the video was posted on Twitter, some netizens questioned that the authorities secretly built a shelter hospital in a place far away from the crowd, "the estimated death toll is again a mystery." Some netizens also believe that it may not be the construction of a shelter hospital, but the Huoshenshan Hospital, which is similar to the military administration of Wuhan City, to let the infected patients "evaporate". Some netizens even suspect that the authorities may use the name of epidemic prevention to create concentration camps that massacre ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.
On 26 July, mainland China media published an article “refuting rumors” saying that this video was not to build a shelter hospital, but to build a “Xinjiang Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (CCP Pneumonia) Medical Treatment Designated Hospital", and said that the designated hospital "should be located in the Economic Development Zone", " District No. 2 Terrace" and so on.
However, the reporter checked the party media reports on the 26th and found that the Xinjiang authorities claimed to have "coordinated all forces" and "based on the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Infectious Disease Hospital, a designated hospital for the treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia in Xinjiang has been established." The two vice presidents of the designated hospital had already appeared at the press conference that day to introduce the operation of the new hospital.
Xinjiang authorities reported that there were 78 newly confirmed cases and so-called "asymptomatic infections" in Urumqi on the 26th. But earlier, the British expert group told the prime minister that the number of infections and deaths in China has been concealed by the CCP 80 to 120 times.
In this wave of Xinjiang epidemic, it is not only the number of infections that may be concealed. According to Xinjiang’s official notification, almost all new infections in the autonomous region were concentrated in Urumqi. However, several short videos posted on the mainland Internet recently showed that Yining, the capital of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, suddenly announced that the city would be closed the next morning on the evening of the 26th. People began to panic buying overnight, and the city was empty on 27 July.
The news of Yining's lock down has not yet been reported by the official mainstream media. However, on 26 July, the Xinjiang Government Procurement Network issued a "Announcement on Competitive Negotiations on Procurement of Emergency Epidemic Prevention and Control Medical Supplies by Yining Epidemic Headquarters."
Earlier, there was an internal notice in Urumqi on the Internet that showed that the epidemic had already broken out in southern Xinjiang and Yili. The closure of Yining this time also verified the information disclosed in the above notice from the side.
