US President Trump said on Thursday (13 August) that Hong Kong will never succeed under the increased control of mainland China and that the global financial center will "go to hell." In an interview with Fox Business Channel, he said: "In contrast to the management of thousands of talents, Hong Kong will never succeed under Chinese management. The Hong Kong market will die and no one wants to do business."
Trump said that the termination of Hong Kong's special treatment by the United States means that Hong Kong will lose its ability to attract business and can no longer maintain its status as a financial center. He said that he originally recognized this long-term relationship, "Once China becomes aggressive and takes over, I will take everything back. If everything is taken back, it will fail."
Trump also said that his views on China have completely changed after the new coronavirus epidemic, and he denounced China for "conniving" the epidemic. But when asked if he thinks that Chinese President Xi Jinping should step down, he said: "They have their own country, and we have our own country."
