Tomorrow (10 July 2020) is the voting day, everyone should have received the voting card. What should I pay attention to on the polling day? "8world News" answers some common questions for you.
Is it illegal to not vote? How can I re-register if I am removed from the electoral roll?
Under normal circumstances, if you do not vote, you will be removed from the electoral roll and lose the right to vote in the next general election.
You can re-register, but you must first explain why you did not vote before. If no justification is provided, a fee of S$50 must be paid.
You can apply for a reinstatement through the Elections Department website, to any community club, or to the Elections Department. After the election writ is issued, the Electoral Department will not accept the request for reinstatement.
Will I lose my right to vote in the future if I am unwell or if I am performing a home notice or isolation order and cannot vote?
If you are unable to vote because you are unwell or performing a home notice or isolation order, the authorities will re-register you for free.
What are the reasons why the authorities cannot accept the vote?
On the polling day:
Go abroad for business;
Study abroad
Husband or wife who accompanies you to study or work abroad;
Travel abroad
Sick or giving birth
What should I pay attention to on the polling day?
Before voting:
Voters can go to the Electoral Office website www.eld.gov.sg, enter their ID number, and the website will display the constituency to which the voter belongs, the address of the polling station, and the allocated two-hour voting period.
Voters can also go online to voteQ.gowhere.gov.sg to check the real-time queuing situation of the polling station before going out.
From 7 pm to 8 pm on polling day, it will be a special polling time for voters who have hyperthermia, take sick leave due to acute respiratory infections and fulfill their home notice at home.
To the polling station:
Before entering the polling station, election officials will measure the temperature of voters. Voters whose body temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees Celsius will not be able to enter the polling station.
After entering the polling station, voters must line up according to the signs on the ground and maintain a safe distance of one meter.
Voters need to show their voting cards and ID cards to the election officials, and pull down their masks to let the election officials verify their identities.
After confirmation, voters should first put away their ID cards and voting cards, then disinfect their hands with disposable hand rub on the table, wear disposable gloves, and then collect ballots from election officials.
When voting:
Voters can use the voting pen provided by the authorities to cross the cross and vote for the candidate they have in mind. Voters can also choose to use their pens to cross the ballots.
Fold the ballot inwards and put it in the ballot box.
If I did not cross the ballot but painted other marks, would my ballot be invalid?
According to the Guiding Principles of Counting Counting Agents introduced by the Electoral Bureau, if a voter makes a non-cross mark on the ballot, as long as the mark on the ballot is in the grid and clearly shows the voter’s wishes, it will not be invalidated.
Is my vote secret?
Your vote is secret. Voters cannot write any identifiable marks on the ballot papers, such as names or ID numbers, otherwise the ballot papers will be invalid.
The Electoral Bureau said that each ballot has a code printed on it to ensure the fairness of democratic elections, but also to facilitate the authorities to conduct statistical ballots and audits, not to know what voters vote for.
After counting, the votes must be sealed and stored in the insurance room of the Supreme Court for six months. These documents can only be taken out under the order of the court, and the court can only issue a court order to take out the ballot if the ballot is fraudulent and affects the result of the vote.
After six months, all ballots and related election documents will be destroyed.
