Phnom Penh or any part of Cambodia might be locked down

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

According to The Phnom Penh Post on 14 November 2020, Cambodia Premier Hun Sen said that he "might request King [Norodom Sihamoni] to sign a lockdown [order] for any part of Phnom Penh or the whole country in times of emergency". However he does not want to do it as lockdown affects the rights and freedom of a lot of people.

Hun Sen said the above in response to three more confirmed covid cases in Phnom Penh after his officials Suos Yara, Sor Chetra and the Hungarian ambassador to Cambodia and Vietnam were tested positive for covid and are being treated at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. A Cambodian bodyguard assigned to the Hungarian delegation was also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

On 3 November 2020, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto and his close contacts met Hun Sen and other Cambodian senior officials in Phnom Penh. Later Szijjarto was diagnosed positive for the CCP virus in Bangkok on 10 November. Hun Sen was quarantined after news of Szijjarto's covid diagnosis reached Phnom Penh.

On 8 November 2020, Hun Sen told The Phnom Penh Post that Cambodia is at high risk of a covid outbreak and described it as alarming. He however said that he will not declare a state of emergency. He has called on people in Cambodia to adhere to health safety measures.

As of 14 November 2020, Cambodia has a total number of 302 confirmed covid cases and no deaths whereas Thailand has a total number of 3866 confirmed covid cases and 60 deaths including five new cases and two new fatalities today.
