7.3 magnitude earthquake on 22 May 2021 in Qinghai, even Taiwan feels it!

An earthquake occurred in Qinghai Province, and local firefighters were reported to go to houses for rescue.  Even Taiwan can feel the earthquake intensity! 

A strong earthquake with a scale of 7.3 on the Richter scale occurred in Qinghai Province, mainland China, with a focal depth of 10 kilometres. The epicenter is about 400 kilometers southwest of Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province. 

According to reports from Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Bureau, many counties and cities in the western half of the country have detected earthquakes at the first level, including the Taozhumiao and Zhangzhongyun areas. 

The Director of Meteorology, Zheng Mingdian, wrote "ominous" on a Facebook post. 

 According to Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake occurred at 2.40 am on 22 May. The epicenter was located at 34.59 degrees north latitude and 98.34 degrees east longitude. The location was about 400 kilometers southwest of Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province. With an average elevation of 4230 meters within 5 kilometers, the area is sparsely populated. No casualties have been reported.

In the past few days, there has been a series of earthquakes in Yangbi, Dali, Yunnan, causing widespread concern. On the evening of the 21st, the Earthquake Administration of Yunnan Province held a press conference to announce that from 6 pm on 18 May to 11 pm on 21 May, a total of 12 earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above occurred in the Yangbi earthquake zone. According to Li Chunguang, director of the Public Service Department of the Yunnan Seismological Bureau, from 6 pm on 18 May to 11 pm on 21 May, a total of 12 earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above occurred in the Yangbi earthquake zone, of which 8 were of magnitude 4.0 to 4.9 and 8 were of magnitude 5.0 to 5.93 1 time, level 6.0 to 6.9 1 time. Since 1900, 34 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or more have occurred within 100 kilometers of the epicenter, of which 29 were magnitudes 5.0 to 5.9 and 4 were magnitudes 6.0 to 6.9. When a medium-strength earthquake occurs, attention should be paid to prevent secondary disasters such as landslides.

Li Chunguang also stated that the Yunnan Seismological Bureau will closely monitor, track and analyze the development trend of the earthquake situation in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Emergency Management, the China Earthquake Administration and the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government. The earthquake occurred in a pastoral area, where most of the brick-wood structure bungalows are scattered and may cause damage to a small number of houses. The disaster situation is being further verified.

After the earthquake, the Ministry of Emergency Management immediately initiated a secondary emergency response to a particularly major earthquake disaster. The Secretary of the Party Committee and Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Management Huang Ming and the leaders of the department in charge rushed to the command center of the Ministry as soon as possible to contact the China Earthquake Administration, the Seismological Network Center and Qinghai Province. The Emergency Management Department, the Fire and Rescue Corps and the earthquake rescue site video link, dispatch to understand the situation in the earthquake area, guide the deployment of fire rescue forces, and deploy rescue and disaster relief work.
