Zhuhai Airport may allow direct international flights to land after reconstruction and expansion
The biennial blue sky event, the China International Aerospace Expo (hereinafter referred to as "China Air Show") is held from 28 September to 3 October 2021. At that time, the world's attention will once again focus on Zhuhai.
In 2019, Zhuhai Airport officially launched the reconstruction and expansion project. After the renovation and expansion, it can meet the operational needs of 27.5 million passenger throughput, 104,000 tons of cargo and mail throughput, and 198,000 passenger aircraft take-offs and landings annually. The start of the reconstruction and expansion project also made the outside world full of reveries about the upcoming opening of the international port in Zhuhai.
In March this year, the "Opinions on Supporting Zhuhai's Construction of a New Era of Socialist Modernization and Internationalization of Special Economic Zones with Chinese Characteristics" was released. The opinions clearly mentioned "accelerating the establishment of an international port at Zhuhai Airport", which means Zhuhai Airport may allow international flights to land after reconstruction and expansion

Construction extends the runway to 4000 metres for the air show
In the 1990s, when the special zone was established, Zhuhai had "ambitions" that outsiders could not understand. Railways, ports, and bridges are being built. At the same time, they are also planning to build an airport.
Liang Guangda, then secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, recalled many years later that he originally only wanted to build an airport, but he did not expect to change his original idea after a visit to Canada.
In 1992, Liang Guangda visited Canada on business. At the time, Canadian Congressman Marley Hunt put forward a suggestion, "Zhuhai is a new coastal city and a national special economic zone. Now you are building an airport, you must take the airshow function into consideration. ."
Marley Hunt's inadvertent suggestion aroused Liang Guangda's great interest in the air show. Holding such an international aerospace event is actually a platform for exchanges between domestic and international enterprises, which has a great driving effect on the development of regional industrial economy. After various arguments, Zhuhai plans to host the China Aerospace Expo.
To this end, Zhuhai Airport has repeatedly coordinated to change the length of the runway. The original plan was to build a runway of 3,200 meters and extend it to 4,000 meters, which not only meets the basic requirements of civil aviation, but is also more than enough for receiving Boeing 747 large passenger planes.
Zhuhai Airport, which was built as an "international model", was officially opened to navigation in June 1995. It can meet the passenger throughput of 12 million passengers per year. It was one of the largest airports in China at that time.

Turning point for Zhuhai Airport at the end of 2007
Every China Airshow needs to receive hundreds of thousands of merchants, visitors and related exhibits from all over the world. Zhuhai Airport is not only one of the passages from other places into Zhuhai, but also an important venue to ensure the smooth holding of the China Air Show.
With the development of the China Air Show, the annual passenger throughput of Zhuhai Airport has been fluctuating between more than 500,000 passengers and more than 700,000 passengers.
The turning point occurred in 2006. The Hong Kong Airport Authority took over the Zhuhai Airport and actively expanded the airport's radiation coverage to areas outside Zhuhai and Macau. Zhuhai Airport continued to add new equipment and facilities to improve service levels, and at the same time, it continued to forge ahead with new and encrypted routes. The series of reforms are embodied in passenger throughput, cargo and mail throughput, and transportation takeoffs and landings, all of which have created the best results since the opening of Zhuhai Airport.
At the end of 2007, the annual passenger throughput of Zhuhai Airport exceeded one million passengers for the first time, and the throughput exceeded 6 million passengers for the first time at the end of 2016.
At the end of 2018, the passenger throughput exceeded 10 million, making it one of the domestic "ten million" airports.

In addition, more than 1,500 Chinese and foreign journalists reported the event on the spot, and the China Air Show demonstrated the charm of a major aerospace country to the world for the first time.
During the event, Wu Bangguo, then Vice Premier of the State Council, announced to the world that the China Aerospace Expo was scheduled to be held in Zhuhai every two years. Since then, every two years, the space event will be held in Zhuhai as scheduled.
Thanks to the holding of the China Air Show, Zhuhai’s "circle of friends" has also grown larger, with more and more countries participating in the China Air Show, and more and more exhibits, such as the Russian "Warrior" flying team and the American "Red Eagle" The aerobatic team and others have appeared in the China Air Show successively.

Expansion: Total investment in the reconstruction and expansion project of Zhuhai Airport
At the beginning of the construction of Zhuhai Airport, the maximum passenger throughput was set at 12.5 million passengers. According to the passenger growth rate in the past five years, Zhuhai Airport is close to saturation, and capacity expansion is imminent.
In November 2019, the Zhuhai Airport reconstruction and expansion project sounded the clarion call. The project is divided into the newly built Zhuhai Airport Comprehensive Service Center and T2 Terminal. The total investment of the two projects is about 8 billion RMB. After the project is completed, it can meet the annual business volume of 27.5 million passengers. According to the plan, the overall construction is expected to be completed by the end of June 2023.
On 28 May, the Southern Metropolis reporter learned from the China Construction Second Bureau of the Zhuhai Airport Reconstruction and Expansion Project that the overall construction progress of the project is currently in good progress, and the preliminary progress plan indicators have been completed ahead of time.
The expansion plan of Zhuhai Airport was released, and the call for the opening of Zhuhai's international port has risen again. In March this year, the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government issued the "Opinions on Supporting Zhuhai's Construction of a Socialist Modernization and Internationalization Special Economic Zone with Chinese Characteristics in a New Era", which clearly mentioned "accelerating the establishment of an international port at Zhuhai Airport". This is the first official confirmation Zhuhai Airport is expected to set up an international port, and the long-awaited "international dream" of Zhuhai Airport will soon become a reality.
The China Air Show is a global aerospace event. If Zhuhai Airport opens an international port, exhibitors may arrive in Zhuhai directly, or reduce the number of transfers during the flight, and arrive at Zhuhai more conveniently. This scene will soon become a reality.
