MOM: One-off waiver of additional week SHN charges for maids' employers

The Work Pass Division of Singapore's Ministry of Manpower has granted one-off waiver of Stay-Home-Notification (SHN) charges at night of 17 May 2021 for employers of maids. The measure is to provide financial relief to Singapore households who have paid sudden exorbitant amounts for an extra week of SHN on behalf of the maids.  These maids enter Singapore from 24 April 2021 to 16 May 2021 from "higher-risk countries" excluding India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Below is the Work Pass Division announcement:

"Employers bringing FDWs into Singapore must comply with the prevailing entry approval requirements. These include paying for their SHN charges, COVID-19 tests and COVID-19 medical insurance.

To provide relief to Singapore households, the Government will waive the additional charges on a one-off basis for employers who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents whose FDWs meet both conditions below:

  • Entered Singapore from 24 Apr 2021 to 16 May 2021
  • Had travel history to higher-risk countries/regions* before they entered Singapore.

Note: This does not refer to FDWs from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan or Sri Lanka. Such FDWs are subject to a different set of waiver conditions. If you have FDWs who meet the waiver conditions, you will receive another email.

Thus, you will not be billed for the following:

  • FDW’s additional 7-day SHN stay at the dedicated SHN facility
  • COVID-19 swab test (taken before additional 7-day SHN is over)

* Higher-risk countries/regions: All countries/regions, except Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Macao, Mainland China and New Zealand (correct as of 17 May 2021)"

Britain and Saudi Arabia resume international travel on 16 and 17 May 2021, airport crowds reappear

As the situation of the covid pandemic improves in Britain and Saudi Arabia, most parts of the UK have further relaxed epidemic prevention restrictions from 16 May 2021 while Saudi Arabia has lifted the ban on going abroad from 17 May.

Restaurants, cinemas and other facilities in the UK have been reopened, and people can also travel abroad. Local officials said that Saudi Arabia will soon allow foreign tourists to enter without isolation after allowing Saudis to travel abroad with effect from 17 May.

The UK resumed international travel on 16 May 2021, and the airport crowds reappeared. People must be tested before leaving the country and after returning home. If any British national goes to the 12 low-risk countries that the authorities have included on the "green list" including Singapore and the US, the returnee does not need to be quarantined after returning home.

A man said, "I used to be busy with work and no time to play. Be nice to yourself, relax, and Portugal is on the green list."

Another said, "I'm going to Ibiza, Spain to reunite with my wife this morning. We haven't seen each other since mid-October last year. It's been seven months."

It is believed that the resumption of travel to and from the US will boost the British economy.

British Airways President Saindall said, "There are many British people living in the US and Canada, and many businesses rely on the US."

On the other hand, the international airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, opened its doors to the public again after a lapse of more than a year. After the ban is lifted, citizens who have been vaccinated as required, and those who have recovered from the covi infection in the past six months can travel abroad.

Confirmed patients leave without testing. Clinic interviewed: 90% of patients are willing to be tested

The 50-year-old teacher who was the first to be diagnosed with the infection at the Learning Point Tuition Centre left without being tested when seeing a doctor, causing social concern. As the number of cases in Singapore's communities is increasing day by day, the interviewed clinic said that nine out of ten people are willing to be tested for covid.

The 20 clinics under a chain of clinics provide 20 to 50 covi swab tests each day. The clinic group said that it would follow the regulations of the Ministry of Health and recommend that patients with symptoms of acute respiratory infections be tested for covid. However, a small number of patients still refuse to be tested.

Family doctor Zhou Jin also said, "I think it should be because of fear of discomfort. This is the most common reason. This is not a mandatory measure, but we strongly encourage people to receive swab testing."

In addition, doctors also welcome the government's decision to use rapid antigen testing with polymerase chain reaction testing. The rapid antigen test can get the result within 30 minutes, which can help speed up the process of finding a confirmed patient.

Study: Working long hours will increase the risk of stroke by 35%

Studies have shown that working long hours will kill people and increase the risk of stroke by 35%. Middle-aged and elderly men are more likely to become victims. The World Health Organization said that this undesirable trend will be further exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

The first global study on how long working hours affect lives and health shows that in 2016, more than 740,000 people died of stroke and heart disease caused by long working hours, nearly 30% more than in 2000.

Li Jian, a professor of occupational health at the University of California, Los Angeles, said: "We found that working 55 hours or more a week increases the risk of death from ischemic heart disease by 17% after ten years and the risk of stroke by 35%."

72% of the related deaths were men. Most of the deceased were between 60 and 79 years old. They used to work more than 55 hours a week between the ages of 45 and 74. The WHO also said that the coronavirus pandemic has forced more people to work from home, and the trend of increasing working hours has worsened.

Frank Pega, WHO Environmental, Climate Change and Health Technology Officer, said: "There is evidence that the number of working hours has increased by about 10% during the lockdown of countries."

The report also shows that the number of people who work long hours is increasing and currently accounts for 9% of the world's total population, with Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific accounting for the largest proportions.

Don't eat covi while eating! 2 keys to detoxify food

Image : The two keys to safe dining are cleaning and disinfection and high-temperature heating. (Shutterstock)

Under the covid epidemic, taking off the mask and eating a meal may be at risk of infection. Calling delivery and buying food home may also allow the virus to enter the house. After all, how can I eat with peace of mind? There are 2 keys.

Covi is not imported by mouth. 2 keys: High temperature heating, disinfection of food packaging
If you want to eat, you must first understand the characteristics of the novel coronavirus (covi). It likes dry and cold places. The lower the temperature and humidity, the more conducive to the survival of the virus.

Covi is afraid of high temperatures, and it can be killed by heating it continuously at a temperature of 56°C within 30 minutes. The cooking temperature can reach 100°C or even higher, and the virus can be killed immediately. Therefore, during the epidemic, both cooked and raw foods are recommended to be heated at high temperature or cooked before eating.

It is also afraid of 75% alcohol. This concentration of alcohol can damage the mantle of the new coronavirus and make the virus inactive. Therefore, disinfecting food packaging, tableware, and tabletops with alcohol can further reduce the chance of infection.

Restaurant meals: Sanitize at any time and order 3 types of food less

During the pandemic, you must be aware of epidemic prevention while eating in restaurants and taking off your masks to enjoy food.

Zheng Yuanyu, a former attending physician at the Infectious Diseases Department of Taipei Veterans General Hospital and a physician at Shangwen Clinic, said that the virus can be transmitted through droplet infection and ring-borne transmission. Droplets have the highest risk of infection because the virus is in a large amount and directly enters the eyes, mouth and nose. Therefore, wearing a mask correctly can block most of the droplets.

Ring-borne transmission refers to indirect contact transmission. For example, A's saliva is sprayed on the surface of the object, B touches it, and then touches the eyes, nose, and mouth to cause the virus to enter the body and become infected. The risk of ring-borne transmission is uncertain, because the number of viruses is an important factor in whether it can cause infection.

Although buying meals, from touching invoices, banknotes, food packaging, to directly eating food, are all possible ways of ring-borne transmission, as long as restaurant employees take preventive measures from cooking, distributing food, and serving dishes, such as wearing masks, gloves, and cleaning hands, the risk of infection can be greatly reduced.

The public should pay attention to the following points:

1. Restaurant type: Buffet-style restaurants have more sources of infection than general restaurants, because the common dishes are more likely to be contaminated; however, if it is a buffet-style hot pot, cooking the ingredients before eating can reduce the risk of infection. When dining in a self-service restaurant, it is recommended to wear a mask before picking up the dishes and disinfect your hands with alcohol; after the dish comes back and take off the mask, disinfect your hands again. Pick more portions at a time, reducing the number of food picks.

2. Meal process: Not only wash your hands before eating, but also wipe the tables and chairs with alcohol. You will take off your mask when you have a meal. Remember to keep a distance from your meal and use your hands less to touch your eyes, nose and mouth. If you leave your seat in the middle of a meal, you must clean your hands again when you return.

Whether you check out when you order a meal, or pay after you finish the meal, you must disinfect the banknote after touching it. Banknotes are a common hiding place for viruses.

3. Raw and cooked food: When ordering, it is recommended to eat less raw food, cold cuts and other refrigerated and frozen ready-to-eat foods. Zheng Yuanyu pointed out that cold dishes have problems such as low temperature, easy to touch, and possible contamination by droplets. The longer they are placed, the more viruses will accumulate, and it is more dangerous to eat them directly. Even if there is no epidemic, cold dishes are still at a higher risk, such as causing E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and salmonella infections.

Take sashimi as an example in raw food. The disadvantage is that it cannot be heated at all. Whether it is clean or not depends on whether the chef's epidemic prevention measures are implemented. So it is easy to become an epidemic prevention breach. It is not recommended to take the sashimi home for consumption, because the longer the storage time, the higher the risk of consumption.

4. Tableware: It is best to bring your own tableware, or sterilize the chopsticks and spoons provided by the restaurant with alcohol again.

5. Shared sauce jars: It is best not to use sauce jars in the shared area. "As long as they are shared, they are dangerous," Zheng Yuanyu said. Especially for sauce jars that have large openings and need to be scooped out with a small spoon, droplets are easier to fall into. If you really need it, a small-opening, pour-out sauce jar is safe. Before taking it, remember to disinfect the surface of the jar.

Food delivery: Reheat before meal, pay attention to 2 hand washing timings

During the epidemic, many people changed to order delivery. If they are worried about the virus in meals and disposable meals, they can reheat the food and use their own utensils.

Method: First wash your hands and prepare your own tableware, then remove all the outer packaging of the meal and throw it away, and pour the meal into the prepared tableware. Then, wash your hands again, take the meal to the microwave or heat it in an electric pot.

Zheng Yuanyu said that during the epidemic, you should wash your hands again at the moment of contact with food because before that, there were opportunities to touch the surface of many objects.

Purchased ingredients: Disinfection of outer packaging, layered storage

Food bought home from the supermarket is recommended to be cleaned and disinfected before storage. Dr. Jeffrey VanWingen, a family physician from Michigan in the United States, posted a video on the Internet last year to teach the public that the outer packaging of food bought from the supermarket should be wiped with alcohol-sprayed tissues before putting it in the refrigerator.

Method: Divide the table into a clean area and an unclean area, put the shopping bag in the unclean area, take out the packaged food, wipe and disinfect it, and then put it in the clean area.

When food is put in the refrigerator, store raw and cooked food in layers, with cooked food on the upper layer and raw food on the lower layer. Zheng Yuanyu pointed out that the refrigerator is usually the place where the family should do a good job of hygiene management.

For bulk foods such as vegetables, fruits, and meat, they still need to be processed before consumption. Fruits are best to be peeled. If not, rinse with running water. Vegetables and meat must be cooked before eating. Washing with running water can wash away 80 to 90% of the virus on the surface of the food. If it is heated and cooked, it can be eaten more safely.

  1. I got my first outbreak when I was 19...the outbreak never went away. The same warts. Doctor said it was a spread from shaving but they never went away. I am 35 now and still have the same warts. I have tried a bunch of home remedies and nothing. Doctor was treating me for like a year but they never really went away, just got black and reduced in size but still never cleared up so I stopped doing it because it had been a year and got expensive especially for a 19 year old kid. I tried aldara but nothing. but thank god for using Dr Ajayi as a helper to me who got me cured from my herpes with his natural herbal medicine, May god continue to bless you and keep giving you the power to help others.
