According to NTDTV, a magnitude 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Zagreb, the capital of Croatia on 22 March 2020. The hospital and emergency services of Croatia said one 15-year-old teenager died and the other minor was injured. The earthquake that caused multiple fires and blackouts in parts of the capital occurred at the same time as the CCP virus pandemic, which made the earthquake relief work more difficult.

The quake struck at 6 am Sunday local time. The epicentre was located 7 kilometres north of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, with a focal depth of 10 kilometres.

According to the GFZ German Research Center for Geoscience (GFZ), the earthquake was originally reported as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, and was finally downgraded to a magnitude of 5.3. The quake was the largest in the Croatian capital Zagreb in 140 years. It can be felt throughout the western Balkans.

The medical department reported that a 15-year-old teenager was seriously injured after the apartment collapsed and was taken to the hospital by emergency personnel. He later died. Another minor sustained a head injury as the roof collapsed.

The earthquake caused multiple fires and power outages in parts of the capital. Fire and rescue personnel are in emergency operation. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said he has sent troops to help clear up debris.

Due to a possible aftershock, Andrej urged residents to stay outdoors while maintaining a social distance to defend against CCP virus infection. A total of 206 cases of infection have been reported in Croatia to date, with one death.

StayGate's Notes:
CCP virus is synonym for SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the contagious disease COVID-19 (covid, in short).
