The Ningshan County Government of Shaanxi Province has reported one case of  hantavirus ('black death', 'Hanta disease', hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, epidemic hemorrhagic fever) on 23 March 2020.

The report goes someone by the surname of Tian was infected a few days ago with hantavirus on a bus passing by Ningshan County and died three hours later. The other 32 passengers of the bus have been isolated. The bus was leased by Shandong Rongcheng Luyang Aquatic Food Co., Ltd. It was returning to Shandong from Mengding Town, Lincang City, Yunnan Province.

The license plate number of the bus is Lu K00149. There are two drivers, one medical staff and 30 labourers on board. When passing through Ningshan County, the on-board medical staff discovered that Tian was unwell, and then dialed emergency hotline 120.

The local 120 emergency centre then took Tian  and other three passengers from the expressway service area to the emergency department of the county hospital, treated Tian, and screened SARS-CoV-2 on the other two fever passengers and one accompanying person.  The other 29 passengers of the bus were all isolated on the spot.

The report said that at 7 o'clock on 23 March, Tian died of ineffective treatment, and he was only 3 hours from onset to death.

Ankang Center for Disease Control and Testing showed that the deceased Tian's hantavirus (hemorrhagic fever) nucleic acid test was positive while two fever personnel and one accompanying person were negative for the first covid virus nucleic acid test, and other people's nucleic acid tests were being collected and samples were sent for laboratory screening.

At present, Ningshan County has issued notifications to relevant cities and counties in Shandong and Yunnan.

Hantavirus is a deadly infectious disease that is transmitted to humans via mice and is classified as a biologically hazardous fourth-level virus. It is also known as the 'black death' in the Middle Ages, is highly contagious and has no remedy. It is widely regarded as one of the most harmful and catastrophic severe plagues in human history.

The incubation period of human infection with hantavirus is usually 7-14 days, and occasionally as short as 4 days or as long as 2 months. The onset of this disease is rapid and progresses rapidly. If it is not treated in time, it can cause death, especially the hantavirus infection carried by the guinea pigs, and the mortality rate of hospitalized patients can reach more than 10 per cent.
