Foreign media believe that the mainland China government's failure to include a large number of asymptomatic infections in confirmed statistics may lead to the second major outbreak in China.

BBC reported on 25 March 2020 (Wednesday) that a large number of asymptomatic infections in Wuhan were not included in the confirmed diagnosis. The report  discussed in detail whether asymptomatic (or mildly symptomatic) infections could lead to the second major outbreak of COVID-19 (covid, in short).

The beginning of this report addresses the issue of Wuhan's upcoming unblocking. It enumerates three new events that have been reported recently, saying that these cases sent "hidden outbreak signals" to the public.

The first event in the announcement of the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission on 24 March 2020 involves one new confirmed case in Wuhan on 23 March 2020, and the patient is a doctor of Hubei Provincial People's Hospital (Headquarters). Some mainland China media also disclosed that the doctor had admitted an asymptomatic person with covid in an outpatient clinic on 18 March 2020, and was diagnosed after a few days.

The second event in the announcement of Wuhan Municipal Government on 22 March 2020 involves a patient with “asymptomatic infection” in Wuhan's “Lishui Kangcheng Community”. According to official regulations, asymptomatic infections are not included in confirmed cases.

In the third event, the Hubei Provincial Epidemic Prevention Agency issued the "Notice on the Suspension of the National and Provincial Aid and Ethics Aid Control Teams from the Hubei Province" on 20 March 2020, requesting the provincial medical aid teams in Wuhan not to leave Hubei for the time being. The specific evacuation time will be notified separately. The mainland China media Caixin.com quoted a source from the China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention as saying that "a few cases or more than a dozen asymptomatic positive patients can be detected every day, and it is not yet possible to determine whether the transmission in Wuhan has been completely blocked." This makes people worry.

The so-called "asymptomatic infection" refers to an infected person who has tested positive for viruses such as respiratory tract specimens, but does not have clinical symptoms such as fever, cough and sore throat. The sixth edition of the "Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia Prevention and Control Plan" issued by the National Health Commission of the Communist Party of China on 6 March 2020 clearly stipulates that asymptomatic infections are not counted as confirmed cases, and are only reported separately in the online direct report as an independent category but these cases will not be announced. This means that outbreak data released in mainland China previously cannot reflect the number of "asymptomatic infected patients" and the risk of virus transmission.

An article published in the well-known international academic journal Nature on 20 March 2020 states that people with mild or asymptomatic infections of covid may account for nearly 60 per cent of all infected people.

The article also cited research results released by the team of Tong Tangchun, Dean of the School of Public Health of Huazhong University of Science and Technology on 6 March 2020, stating that at least 59 per cent of people with mild or asymptomatic infections in Wuhan have not been found.

In addition to the known confirmed cases, there is also a large group of asymptomatic infections. This fact makes the Chinese people doubt whether the epidemic is really under control. A notice issued by the Wuhan Health Commission on the evening of 23 March 2020 stated that although asymptomatic infections also “have a certain risk of transmission”, the World Health Organization believes that “the novel coronavirus is mainly transmitted by patients who have already developed symptoms ", So asymptomatic infections are not the main source of transmission.

The BBC believes that the official response in mainland China may "underestimate" the risk of transmission of the virus by asymptomatic people.

BBC cites a prominent example.

A paper published by the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) on 19 March 2020 has shown that one infected person never showed symptoms, but the amount of virus he released was comparable with patients that have symptoms of covid. In addition, some scientists abroad believe that some people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 are highly contagious when mild or asymptomatic.

Based on the above, the article concluded that "the ability of people with mild or asymptomatic infections to transmit the virus is not weak," and that such people with hidden infections may trigger a "new round of outbreaks." .
