The Chinese research team found that pangolin is not an intermediate host for COVID-19 (covid, in short) but it could be a potential natural host for another virus, which is similar to covid.

According to China’s “Science and Technology Daily” on 23 March 2020 a team led by Zhang Zhigang, a researcher at Yunnan University in China, reassembled and comprehensively analyzed the virus data of pangolin lung samples that failed rescue in March 2019, and found that the pangolins carry a coronavirus similar to covid, and the genome similarity to this disease is 91.02 per cent.

Zhang Zhigang said that because the genome similarity between pangolin virus and SARS-CoV-2 (covi, in short) does not reach the 99 per cent or more similarity required by the intermediate host, it proves that the pangolin virus and covi are not the same virus, and also proves that pangolin is not an intermediate host for covid.

China South China Agricultural University announced in February 2020 that they found that the isolates of pangolins had a sequence similarity of 99 per cent with the newly-infected human covi, and pangolin was a "potential intermediate host" for covi, but subsequent research confirmed that the above report by South China Agricultural University was a false positive and released revised data with a similarity of 90.3 per cent.
