On 16 March 2020 (Monday), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the U.S. announced that the first batch of "COVID-19 (covid, in short) vaccine has entered human testing.

The covid vaccine, which entered human testing on Monday, is codenamed mRNA-1273, which was jointly developed by the National Institute of Health and Moderna Biotechnology Corporation.

A total of 45 healthy volunteers were vaccinated at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle.

Jackson, lead researcher at the Washington Health Research Institute, said, "This is the first (human) test of this vaccine. Our goal is very basic. We need to look at its safety, followed by the immune response, especially when the vaccine targets that particular type of virus. and produces the antibodies against that particular (viral) protein."

Developers said that because the vaccine itself does not contain "SARS-CoV-2", testers will not be infected with covid because of the vaccine.

This round of human testing takes about one year to complete to determine the side effects, safety and efficacy of the vaccine and lay the foundation for larger tests in the future.

If all goes well, the vaccine may be widely used after 18 months.
