Image : South African Airways has cancelled flights to Hong Kong, Guangzhou and other destinations, partly due to the pandemic.

On 16 March 2020, the South Africa government issues more stringent anti-pandemic measures including closing all 35 checkpoints including airports, ports, rail and border checkpoints, cancelling all international government activities and suspending issuance of entry visas to Italy, the US, China and other countries or regions.

The South Africa government recommends its citizens not to go to the current high-risk areas, close South African primary and secondary schools from 18 March to the end of the Easter holidays, and cancel all large-scale celebrations, especially for assemblies with more than 100 people. There are vigorous international passenger screenings and testings at airports.

Since the first confirmed case of covid occurred on 5 March 2020, as of  9 pm on 15 March 2020, South Africa has accumulated 61 confirmed cases within 10 days. Especially in the last two days, the number of confirmed patients has maintained a double-digit increase every day, and the "moderate" epidemic prevention measures that the South African government has taken before have exacerbated external concerns.
