Panama's diabetic patient died of COVID-19 among 41 cases in Central America

The Panamanian Ministry of Health confirmed on 10 March 2020 that eight confirmed cases of COVID-19 (covid, in short) in the country, including one who died of the disease. This is the first time that a related death has been reported in Central America. In addition, Jamaica and Bolivia have reported their first cases.

Panama Health Minister Rosario Turner said at a press conference that eight patients were notified of the diagnosis of covid. One was in the intensive care unit and the other died unfortunately. The first patient arrived from Spain.

The deceased in Panama is a 64-year-old man who had suffered from diabetes complications related to bacterial pneumonia before his death. The remaining 7 confirmed cases are aged between 29 and 59 years old, and they all have a history of going abroad recently.

Panama is the second Central American country to report confirmed cases of covid after Costa Rica. The Panamanian government has ordered public and private schools in the affected areas of the country to be suspended until 7 April 2020.

With the above 8 confirmed cases in Panama, Central America has a total of 41 confirmed covid cases. The number could be rising.

Mexico has seven confirmed covid cases, of which three patients have recovered.

In Costa Rica, to date, thirteen people were tested positive, including three Americans.

In Dominican Republic, there are five covid patients. The first patient arrived from Italy and the case is reported on 2 March 2020. The second patient is a Canadian tourist who was tested positive four days later.

The first covid patient of Jamaica is a woman returning from the UK. Saint Barthelemy has also one covid patient.

In Bolivia, the first two patients are women aged 60 and 64. Recently, they visited Italy, the hardest-hit area in Europe, and later confirmed the diagnosis in Oruro, Bolivia and Santa Cruz Province.

Both Saint Martin and Martinique have reported two covid cases.
