Former President of the Republic of China Lee Teng-hui passed away at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital on the evening of July 30, at the age of 97. Lee Teng-hui was the first elected president of the Republic of China. He warned the people that "Communism is a lie" and was an excuse for the Communist Party to gain power and deceive the people. He publicly stated that to see the true face of the CCP, he must read the "Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party." Before his death, Lee Teng-hui rarely commented on Xi Jinping and asserted that it is difficult for Xi to become a world leader.
Lee Teng-hui actively promotes democratic elections
Li Denghui was born in 1923 and his ancestral home was a Hakka in Yongding, Fujian. He was a Ph.D. from Cornell University in the United States. He was favored by Jiang Jingguo and entered politics. In 1988, Chiang Ching-kuo died during the presidency, and Lee Teng-hui succeeded him as the president.
After that, Lee Teng-hui actively promoted direct presidential elections and became the first directly elected president in the history of the Republic of China in 1996. His term of office expired on May 19, 2000. He is known as the pioneer of Taiwan's democracy. He is called "Mr. Democracy" internationally, saying that he completed the democratization of Taiwan without civil war or coup, which is rare in the world.
Lee Teng-hui: Communism is a lie
When he was young, Lee Teng-hui once studied the "Das Kapital" by Marx, the founder of communism, and joined the Communist Party for a time. But he later discovered that communism was deceiving, "the relationship between workers and capitalists is not what (Marx) said", so he gave up communism.
Lee Teng-hui obtained a postdoctoral degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University in the United States and returned to Taiwan and joined the KMT.
In an interview with the BBC in 2014, Lee Teng-hui said, “Communism is a lie.” The purpose of the Communist Party’s governance is not to overthrow the capitalist system, but to seize power and deceive the people.
Lee Teng-hui particularly emphasized the power of faith. He said: "Chinese people should start with faith and human rights, practice faith, allow individuals to be free, and pursue the universal value of human rights. Only in this way can China experience a qualitative change from autocracy to democracy. Changes; and China’s democratization and the quality of future democracy depend on the beliefs and ideals of the ruling and opposition parties and the general public who promote democratization."
Lee Teng-hui rarely evaluates Xi Jinping
During the interview, Lee Tenghui rarely commented on Xi Jinping. He did not believe that Xi Jinping can lead China to democracy. "Xi Jinping does not have this foundation."
In May 2014, Lee Tenghui held a meeting with students at Soochow University. He bluntly stated that "Xi Jinping may be more ambitious than Mao Zedong." He does not agree with Xi Zhong's Maoist line.
Lee Teng-hui asserted at the time that as far as he observed, Xi Jinping wanted the more power as possible, and had the ambition to fight for world leadership with the United States. However, if the complex issues within mainland China are not resolved, it would be difficult to become a world leader.
He pointed out that the biggest problem in Mainland China is that there is no freedom of thought, freedom, or religion, and there is a big gap between it and democratic countries.
In 2018, the CCP passed a constitutional amendment, and Xi Jinping became the "lifetime chairman." According to a report by the Central News Agency, Lee Teng-hui said that Xi Jinping’s absolute power is in his hands and he does not know what to do. Under such circumstances, it is very important to promote Taiwan’s membership in the United Nations.
