The Ministry of Industry and Rural Affairs of mainland China has issued a notice on 4 March 2020, stating that the species listed in the "National List of Key Protected Economic Aquatic Plant Resources" and the new aquatic species announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs will be strictly managed in accordance with laws and regulations such as the Fisheries Law.

Chinese sturgeon, turtles and other amphibians and reptiles included in the above-mentioned aquatic animal related list will be managed in accordance with aquatic animals. This notice means that Chinese sturgeon and turtles are not included in the banned wildlife consumption list in mainland China.

According to the National Geographic Magazine, Chinese sturgeons are critically endangered fishes that can weigh up to 1300 pounds. They are shark-like fishes that live in the Yangtze River for perhaps 140 million years. They have pectoral fins, rounded snouts and rows of pronounced ridges running the lengths of their spikes and flanks.

According to China News Service, the complete list of wildlife animals banned from consumption has not yet been released. Only Chinese sturgeon and turtles are reported to be excluded.

It is believed that the China Communist Party (CCP) is doing its best to save the livelihoods of wildlife traders and restaurants in China affected by the wildlife consumption ban imposed as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic.
