On 7 March 2020, the Ministry of Health of Cambodia announced 1 positive COVID-19 (covid, in short) case, based on confirmation from Institut Pasteur du Cambodge.
The covid patient is a 38-year-old Cambodian man from the town of Siem Reap. Prior to the diagnosis, he had close contact last week with a 40-year-old Japanese man, who had passed through Siem Reap before returning to Japan where he was diagnosed positive with the disease at Nagoya Chubu Airport.
The Cambodian man is one of eight people that had close contact with the Japanese tourist. The other people include a Japanese lady, two women, one man and three family members of the infected Cambodian. They are under quarantine at Siem Reap Referral Hospital for 14 days.
To contain the spread of covid in Siem Reap, Prime Minister Hun Sen has ordered immediate closure of all schools in Siem Reap to "protect children who do not know protective measures". In addition to closing schools, he has also cancelled the Angkor Sankran festival in mid-April that is traditionally held in conjunction with the Khmer New Year.
Cambodia did not have any reported infection of covid after the first patient Jia Jianhua, a Chinese tourist from Wuhan, was discharged from Sihanoukville on 9 February 2020.
According to Ly Sovann, the Director of the CDC Department of the Ministry of Health of Cambodia, all Cambodians and foreigners in Cambodia could be tested and treated by doctors for covid, free-of-charge.
