The Hong Kong Government gazetted ``Temporary exemption from registration requirements for mainland inspectors in Hong Kong"

Report by : Gan Yung Chyan, KUCINTA SETIA

The third wave of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Hong Kong continues. The Hong Kong government issued a gazette in the evening of 7 August 2020 to elaborate on the framework of the work of the mainland Support Team in Hong Kong, saying that it has gazetted the "Medical Laboratory Technologists (Special Exemption) Regulation" to temporarily exempt them from registration requirements for accredited laboratory testers to perform medical laboratory work in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong government stated that because the popularization of the community testing program requires a large number of testing personnel, it has communicated with the National Health Commission to send laboratory testing personnel with nationally recognized qualifications and sufficient testing training and experience to Hong Kong to assist in testing. The Hong Kong government emphasized that mainland testers will only engage in testing related to SARS-CoV-2. After completing the universal community testing program, they will return to the mainland and will not stay in Hong Kong for other tasks.

The Hong Kong government stated that the personal data provided by citizens who voluntarily participate in universal community testing will be encrypted and stored on government data center servers and will not be sent overseas. It also stated that all testing will only be conducted in Hong Kong and samples will not be sent outside Hong Kong.  They will be destroyed after testing.

The Hong Kong government also stated that it has selected the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park Gymnasium in Sai Ying Pun for BGI to set up a temporary air film laboratory. The laboratory meets the second-level biosafety level and will also adopt relevant infection control measures to properly dispose of waste and will not emit harmful gases.

Huada Gene said that 16 temporary air-film fire-eye laboratories are being built in the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park Gymnasium. They are expected to be opened within two weeks and can perform 100,000 tests per day. The total test volume of Huasheng Diagnostic Center will be increased from 30,000 per day to 130,000.
