US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on 22 April 2020 that the United States is requesting access to multiple virus laboratories in mainland China to help determine the source of SARS-CoV-2. He refused to accept the World Health Organization (WHO) assessment that the virus originated in animals.
In an exclusive interview with The National of the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, Pompeo said, "We, the whole world, still cannot enter the Chinese laboratory."
He mentioned for the first time several laboratories outside the Wuhan Institute of Virology, although the laboratories of this institute are critical to determine the source of the virus.
As for who should lead the international investigation, he did not specify.
Pompeo told the National News that entering the CCP laboratory is very important to determine the origin of the virus. It is important to get answers to this question, not just to clarify a historical event, but to prevent such things from happening again. It is time to have transparency and access so that the world can respond.
Pompeo clearly pointed out that there are a number of laboratories in China that need to be inspected by the world.
"These laboratories in China are not only the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but also many laboratories, where the CCP is studying pathogens of different levels," Pompeo told the National Daily. "It is important to have a global effort to give those working in hazardous materials the ability to prevent accidental leaks."
He reiterated that the virus originated in mainland China, and criticized the CCP government for "through their false propaganda activities" suggesting that the virus originated in Europe or was brought into Wuhan by American soldiers.
Pompeo pointed out, "It's dangerous, it's not a political issue. In order to save lives, you have to know the nature of the virus and the way through. But this has not happened, they are too slow."
He also criticized WHO for not requesting it and the CCP for not providing this information.
Pompeo also emphasized that US allies such as Germany and Australia have now expressed support for the US government's efforts to find out the truth about the source of the virus.
Although WHO claims that SARS-CoV-2 is spread by animals, just like Pompeo, more and more people speculate that this deadly virus is likely to come from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
