There is widespread rumour that claimed that the seasonal flu that began in the United States last year was COVID-19 (covid, in short). However,  American research institutes tested more than 6,000 flu samples early this year and found the first sample infected with the covid virus SARS-CoV-2 (covi, in short) on 21 February 2020.

On 12 April 2020, Trevor Bedford, a virology expert at the University of Washington in Seattle, United States, tweeted 18 tweets that pointed out that there was too much on Twitter about rumours on California flu last fall as covid. The actual situation is that covi did not spread to the United States until January and February 2020.

Bedford then gave two pieces of evidence. One is the test results of the influenza samples collected from January to 10 March 2020, and the other is the genetic relationship of the covi genome sequence.

Among them, a large number of influenza samples used to detect covi came from the Seattle Flu Project, a collaborative project of several Seattle local academic centers. The project is funded by the Bill Gates Foundation and led by Chinese scholar Helen Chu. The content of the project is to recruit volunteers with flu symptoms, let them self-sample and send them to the research center for scientists to study the characteristics of epidemic virus transmission and mutation.

After the outbreak of covi, these influenza samples became a natural resource for studying epidemic prevention. Beginning in late February, the scientists of this project conducted a covi test on the samples. As a result, it was found that the 3600 influenza samples collected in January had a CV positive rate of zero. Of the 3308 samples in February, 10 were positive, but the earliest positive sample appeared on 21 February.

In addition, the research team also confirmed that the acute respiratory infection samples from October 2019 to 20 February 2020 contain a variety of different viruses, including influenza, RSV, rhinovirus, interstitial lung virus and seasonal coronavirus, Covi (Wuhan coronavirus) does not exist until 21 February 2020.

Bedford said in a tweet that it is clear that the flu in the United States in 2019 is not caused by covi.

This seasonal flu in the United States began in September last year and soon spread to almost the entire United States. According to the official epidemic report, the first case in the United States and the first case of CCP pneumonia outside Asia was diagnosed in Seattle on 21 January, and this person had just returned from visiting relatives in Wuhan, China.

Seasonal influenza has already become a global epidemic outbreak every autumn and winter, but the mortality rate is relatively low, causing about 650,000 deaths every year. Chinese scholars have published papers that it is estimated that more than 80,000 people die of influenza every year in China, but the Chinese Communist Party officials conceal relevant data.

In addition to the detection of influenza samples in the United States, Bedford also cited the global virus evolution tree updated daily by the International Virus Gene Bank website (GISAID) to prove that the virus started in Wuhan.
