Wing Fong Court, Geylang Apartment, which is listed as a covid infection group, has an increase of  six cases on 23 April 2020, with a cumulative number of 12 confirmed cases. Since the vast majority of the residents here are migrant workers, it is believed that it is also migrant workers who have been diagnosed with the disease recently.

Wing Fong Court (located at Lorong 14 Geylang) was built in 1997 and has 88 units. Because the apartment is located in the area of the red light district, locals rarely choose to live there.

It is known that almost all of the apartment units are leased to guest workers. Some housing brokers also claim that some units believe that they are rented to more than six people. However, private housing regulations can only be rented to six unrelated tenants.

A female employer who once rented a unit in Wing Fong Court to six employees said that as far as she understood, the apartment sometimes lived with many migrant workers in a unit, and often smoked, chatted, etc. downstairs, and the health situation was also lacking. So she had found another place for her employees two years ago.

Cheap rents in Geylang, over-renting conditions

Cai Yinzhou (29 years old), a young social entrepreneur who grew up in Geylang and often held communication activities for migrant workers, pointed out that according to the rental market, rents in Geylang apartments are relatively cheap and relatively affordable for guest workers. As a result, there may be over renting.

He also said that the migrant workers lived intensively in the unit and could not maintain a safe distance at all.

"They are at a higher risk of an outbreak. Just like the situation of guest dormitory, it can be understood that these guest workers who live in apartments will also worry about their own safety and fear of getting sick."

For this kind of migrant workers who do not live in dormitories, the migrant worker assistance organization "Home of Love" pointed out on Saturday that different groups of migrant workers get significantly different resources, and the implementation of safety distance measures also varies. The migrant workers who have rented beds are among the most unsupported and vulnerable groups. I hope the authorities can step up their assistance.

In January 2020, Wing Fong Court and the adjacent Wing Fong Mansions have successively launched collective sales in the market. The former has a reserve price of 108 million Dollars, and the latter has a reserve price of 176 million Dollars.

Bona Real Estate, a real estate consulting company responsible for sales, pointed out at the time that the two lots may be connected by an underground passage to form a development project, but this must be approved by the Urban Renewal Authority.

The tender for the two apartments was originally scheduled to close in May. Hou Wenbin, the real estate consultant responsible for handling the tender, revealed that some procedures have to be delayed due to the covid pandemic and he is still in contact with the authorities.
