The virus circuit breaker period in Singapore is currently set at four weeks. In view of the fact that people with the virus can infect without symptoms, local infectious disease expert Dr Leong Hoe Nam has recommended extending the period for two weeks for safety reasons. Chinese expert Zhang Wenhong has suggested that if life is to be shut down to cut off the chain of infection, the work must be interrupted thoroughly.
Dr Leong Hoe Nam, an infectious disease specialist of Elizabeth Novena Hospital, said in a Zaobao video interview that, assuming that the asymptomatic person transmits the virus to his family, it will take two weeks to wait for the family member to get sick, and then set aside two or three weeks to estimated six weeks before and after for the virus to discharge completely.
He pointed out that Singapore’s epidemic control is not as strict as China, and after a week of blocking, some people asked if they could go out to run or walk with their dogs. "As a doctor, I prefer the Chinese approach, but our people certainly cannot accept it."
Dr Leong said that when the government stipulates that only institutions that provide the necessary services can operate, the authorities have received a lot of enterprises' reflections, hoping to continue to allow employees to work. "If not strictly implemented, the virus will only stay in Singapore for longer."
Dr. Zhang Wenhong says an important condition for closing down a city is doing it thoroughly. He believes that only when there are less than five new cases per day can the virus control in Singapore be more confident.
Dr. Zhang in Shanghai often uses humorous language to explain infectious diseases. He is affectionately known by netizens as "Dad Zhang".
He also opened the "Huashan Infection" Weibo account named after his own specialty department for scientific medical knowledge. He once compared China's hardline epidemic prevention practice to the Shaolin faction, and Singapore is a seemingly calm and actually very powerful Wudang faction.
Dr Zhang said in the interview that looking back now, the lockdown of Wuhan and the thorough joint defense and joint control are very correct decisions.
"If there were no closed cities in Wuhan at that time, how many Wuhan would appear? If there were 10 Wuhan, how much power would we have to support Wuhan? We may not have so many beds, which should be Shaolin's main move."
He pointed out that the lockdown of cities in Europe and the United States is not very thorough. People in Asia have passed SARS and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) epidemics and are more in line with the government's decision.
"We have been very touched by Premier Li's speeches in Singapore several times. Our two countries view this issue from a very high strategic level. The people understand that they are staying at home.", Dr Zhang said.
He also analyzed that when the city was closed in Wuhan, it happened to be the Chinese New Year holidays and took advantage of the "opportunity" that most people did not go to work to get over a latent period of the virus.
Dr Zhang quipped, "We were not going to work anymore, you are still at work, this is the difference between Shaolin and Wudang at that time. What Europe and the United States want to pursue is Singapore like this, and it can still work normally after control. To control the epidemic, the challenge is that if we treat a large number of imported cases after we open up to Europe and the United States, we must also learn from Singapore for normal management. "
He also pointed out, "An important condition for the lockdown of the city is that it must be done thoroughly, otherwise the two-week closure of the city will be meaningless."
