After a prison in the capital of Lima, Peru, reported that two inmates died of covid, other inmates worried about infection and launched a riot and hanged slogans to demand release. The incident killed 9 prisoners and injured dozens of prison guards.

More than 600 inmates in Peru’s crowded prison system have contracted covid, 15 of whom died.

The incident occurred on 27 April 2020, located in Castro, Lima. Castro prison has an official capacity of 1,140, but actually holds 5,500.

Prison riots were triggered by the prisoners' fear of the spread of the pandemic. The authorities controlled the situation after nightfall. The number of deaths initially announced was 3 deaths, and later gradually improved to 9 deaths. Many of the dead were obviously shot by police.

The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) stated that in addition to the 9 deaths, another 60 prison guards, 5 police officers and 2 prisoners were injured.

In addition, the largest prison in Peru, Lirigancho (Lurigancho) in northern Lima, also erupted on 28 April 2020, and the prisoners demanded that the prison provide preventive measures against covid to prevent them from being infected.

Some prisoners held up a banner saying, "We are dying, don't let us die from infection, we need medicine." Two hours after the protest lasted, the prison and the prisoners reached an agreement to protest the end of the declaration.

Earlier, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra announced that he would pardon 3,000 inmates who were least resistant to covid including those in Castro prison. The demonstrators in the Kaschu prison demanded to be included in the amnesty plan.

The Peruvian Ministry of Health confirmed on 28 April that more than 30,000 people were diagnosed with covid and 854 died. The number of diagnoses is the second highest in Latin America, after Brazil.
