The expert group of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil announced on 2 July 2020 that they found in the sewer water sample analysis of the city of Florianopolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, between October 2019 and March 2020, SARS-CoV-2 in November 2019 among the sewer water samples. This discovery was earlier than the first confirmed case of covid officially announced on the American continent - 21 January 2020 in the United States by two months and three months earlier than the first confirmed new case of covid announced by the Brazilian government at the end of February 2020.
The research report entitled "Santa Catarina Brazil's Sewer Discovers SARS-CoV-2 in November 2019" was jointly published by 14 researchers from the Santa Catarina Federal University. The report pointed out that the novel coronavirus has appeared in Brazil more than a month before the first confirmed case was announced worldwide.
Professor Fangro, who participated in the study, said that during routine inspections of frozen water samples from sewers in Florianópolis every month, SARS-CoV-2 was found in the samples last November. At first, scientists were skeptical of this result, and then conducted a second test with different coronavirus markers in different laboratories, repeated all the data, tracked the virus genome, and reached consistent conclusions.
