Consolidating Kazakh and Chinese media reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it is clarifying the association between recent cases of pneumonia and covid in Kazakhstan. Although it is expected that many cases of pneumonia will be diagnosed as covid, it is currently open towards the nature of the new coronavirus in Kazakhstan as another variety of covid.

WHO expert Ryan stated at an online press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10 July 2020 that with regard to recent pneumonia cases in Kazakhstan, WHO is paying attention to testing practices and quality to ensure that the test results are correct. Ryan said that WHO is collaborating with the Kazakh government, including examining case images to determine whether these pneumonia cases are related to covid.

Kazakhstan’s Health Minister Alexei Choi informed the Kazakh media on Thursday that the incidence of pneumonia in the country increased by 55.4% compared with the same period in 2019 in the first half of this year, with a total of 98,546 diagnosed cases. He also pointed out that the unknown pneumonia has a "potential risk", and currently the treatment plan is formulated according to the treatment standard of covid.

The Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan recently reminded Chinese citizens to prevent Kazakhstan’s “unknown pneumonia” epidemic, saying that the epidemic is deadlier than covid, which has caused international concern. However, Kazakhstan's health ministry dismissed the Chinese media report as "fake news" based on the report issued by the embassy and said it is probably covid.
