In the early morning of 17 June 2020, floods and debris flows broke out in Danba County, Ganzi, Sichuan. The video released by many netizens was shocking, and the torrential floods washed away many villages along the way, and some villages disappeared directly. The mudslides also engulfed and buried many villages. How many villagers were killed in their sleep is still a mystery.
The Beijing News reported that in the early morning of 17 June, Meilonggou, Banfanmen Town, Danba County, Ganzi, Sichuan, formed a dammed lake due to the debris flow blocking the Xiaojinchuan River. From the Propaganda Department of the Ganba Damba County Party Committee in Sichuan, dams have overflowed and flooded the river, and village houses and power stations have been flooded and destroyed. At present, more than 20,000 people have been evacuated and moved to a safe area.
Yang Hua (pseudonym), a villager in Meilonggou, said that the landslide occurred at three or four in the night. When he was sleeping, he was awakened by the people in the village and said that a landslide had occurred, and he left in time with the reminder of the villagers. Subsequently, the dammed lake caused by the landslide flooded the village.
The live video showed a landslide occurred in a mountain covered with vegetation, and most houses in the distant ravine were washed away by muddy water and stones.
In addition to Meilonggou, villages in the lower reaches of the Xiaojinchuan River were also affected by dammed lakes.
The staff of the Propaganda Department of the Danba County Party Committee said that the barrier lake caused the roads in the Lanshuiwan section to be interrupted, and a landslide occurred in the A Niangzhai Village of the Lanshuiwan.
As of 12 pm on 17 June, the Meilonggou dammed lake was basically stable, but began to overflow. The river impacted downstream, and the river near Aniangou Village destroyed the houses and roads of the village.
In addition, facilities such as houses, transportation, power, and communications in the disaster-stricken areas were damaged to varying degrees. The eroded roads totaled about 1.7 kilometres. The Meilonggou power station was destroyed and the Aniangou power station was threatened.
