The World Health Organization admitted on Tuesday (7 July 2020) that evidence of the spread of SARS-CoV-2 through the air is emerging, and the outside world is concerned about the risk of covi airborne transmission in the closed environment of public transportation. In response, KMB replied to Ming Pao newspaper that it has completed the conversion of more than 200 double-decker buses with the addition of cross-ventilation windows, and is planning to modify the windows of 3900 buses of the entire KMB fleet. KMB said earlier that when necessary, it can arrange to open the vents to let in the air outside the car to enhance natural wind circulation.
KMB also said that there are currently 500 buses equipped with hand sanitizers for disinfection purpose of passengers and frontline staff, and it is expected to increase to 1,000 vehicles within July 2020. The disinfection carpets for the 3,000 buses on board will be replaced within this month.
KMB 200 buses have cross windows to assist air circulation within half a year
Earlier reported on 11 March 2020 in Ming Pao, KMB said that in order to reduce the risk of covid transmission, traversing windows will be added to 200 double-decker buses within six months to enhance air circulation. The first two have been equipped with traversing vehicles. The double-decker bus from the window has been in service since 12 March 2020 on Route 81.
According to Lin Zihao, Director of KMB's Communications and Public Affairs Department, each bus air-conditioning system of KMB has its air freshening function. After adding four traversing windows on the upper and lower floors of the bus, passengers can open the windows to increase the cabin air circulation when necessary.
Liang Lingyan, Manager of the KMB Planning and Development Department, said that the 200 double-decker buses with traversing windows are operating along urban bus lines with higher passenger capacity, including Route 81 between Shatin and Jordan. Line 1A of Maoping in Zhongxiu and Tsim Sha Tsui Pier, etc.
