US Secretary of State Pompeo met with the survivors of the June 4 massacre on behalf of Wang Dan and others. Then the US State Department issued a statement for the 31st anniversary of the June 4 incident. Expressed concern about China's democratization movement. After the meeting, Wang Dan published an article on Facebook to disclose the situation at the meeting and disclosed that he made three suggestions to the US government.

At noon on June 3 (early morning on June 4, Beijing time), the US State Department issued the "Tiananmen Square 31st Anniversary Statement."

The opening statement stated that the US government “salute to the brave Chinese people”. The Chinese people once peacefully called for democracy, human rights, and a society free from corruption, but these peaceful appeals were rejected by China on June 4, 1989. The Communist Party (CCP) ended its violent crackdown by sending soldiers armed with tank guns into Tiananmen Square.

The statement said that the Chinese people’s struggle in Tiananmen Square 31 years ago inspired and encouraged the oppressed in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to demand democratic change, while the Chinese Communist government persisted in suppressing, controlling messages and brutal atrocities. Until 31 years later, the total number of missing or dead Tiananmen protesters remains unknown.

The statement said that the United States will continue to "applaud" the Chinese people's desire to pursue democracy and freedom. The American people stand together with the families of the victims of the Chinese Communist Party's tyranny and express their condolences to the victims on June 4, 1989.

The statement mentioned "Tiananmen mothers" who lost their loved ones in the massacre 31 years ago. Although they faced great personal difficulties and risks, they never stopped being accountable for the death of their children. To this end, the US government reiterated its call to the CCP government to fully and publicly account for the number of people killed or missing in that year.

The statement concluded that the Chinese people have longed for the establishment of a "government that safeguards human rights, fundamental freedoms, and basic human dignity." For this, the United States will stand with the Chinese people.

Earlier, Pompeo met Wang Dan, a student leader of the "Eighth-Nine Students' Movement", Li Hengqing, Li Lanju, and writer Su Xiaokang from the Tiananmen Massacre in the afternoon of June 2, in the State Council Office. The next day, Wang Dan published an article on his face book describing his meeting with Secretary of State Pompeo.

Wang Dan introduced in the post that Pompeo expressed his concern about the 31st anniversary of the "June 4th Incident" during the meeting and hoped to understand the views of the Chinese democracy movement on how the United States should help China move toward democratization.

During the meeting, Wang Dan made three suggestions to the US government: 1. The US policy on China should shift to direct dialogue with China’s civil society and the Chinese people; 2. In the future Sino-US trade negotiations, the improvement of Chinese labor. The two issues of human rights and the lifting of China’s Internet blockade were put on the negotiation list; 3. The United States should help the Chinese people understand the truth of many historical events, including the June 4th.

The post stated that this was a historic meeting and thanked Mr. Pompeo for his expectation and support for China to move towards democracy.
