Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said that Canada Ministry of Health has approved the first SARS-CoV-2 serum antibody detection technology on 13 May 2020. The test technology is safe and approved to detect specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the blood of individuals. He said that this is a key step for the Canadian official covid immunization working group.

In late April, the Canadian government announced that it would invest approximately 1.1 billion Canadian dollars in medical research and vaccine research and development to combat the virus. One of the measures is to establish a covid immunization working group composed of multiple medical professionals.

The Canada Ministry of Health said that serum antibody testing will help to better understand whether the infected person is immune to the virus, and in-depth research on it will also help to understand the relationship between antibody positive and prevention of reinfection.

Health authorities said that in the next two years, under the leadership of the Coronavirus Disease Immunization Working Group, at least one million blood samples will be collected and tested in Canada, targeting the general population and health care workers, the elderly and other specific populations susceptible to viruses.

Canada has so far approved 18 kinds of coronavirus related detection technology equipment. In addition to this serum detection technology, the remaining 17 are nucleic acid detection technology equipment.
