An export textile factory with at least 900 employees in Guatemala has more than 200 employees diagnosed with covid. This may be the country's largest epidemic outbreak. There will be more follow-up inspections for the results.
The K.P. Textil textile mill was located in San Miguel Petapa. The textile mill has been closed for two weeks from 12 May, and six people have been diagnosed with the infection before then.
Zulma Calderon, the health prosecutor of the Guatemala Human Rights Prosecutor’s Office, said that as early as in May, he was notified that workers in this textile factory continued to work after being infected with the disease, and the employers did not take preventive measures. The Ministry of Health is conducting inspections on all employees in the plant.
After investigation by the Ministry of Health, it was stated on 23 May that the source of the factory epidemic situation should be an infected worker.
The local health unit said that as early as 12 May, some suggestions were made due to the diagnosis of the factory, but the factory supervisor did not cooperate to take measures. However, the manager of the textile mill, Francisco Reyes, denied the above statement and stated that the authorities had not notified him of a diagnosis in the mill.
Reyes said, "We are currently reorganizing the staff restaurant to comply with the social distance of epidemic prevention."
Guatemala reported on 24 May that more than 3,300 people were diagnosed in the country, and 58 were incurable.
