According to the European Union News Agency in Greece, the Greek Ministry of Health announced in the afternoon of 23 May 2020 that Greece has added 3 new confirmed cases of covid to the previously confirmed cases.

According to reports, the Greek government announced earlier that from 15 June 2020, Greece will first open its borders to 19 countries that are better at controlling the pandemic. After 1 July, it will further allow other foreign tourists to enter Athens and other cities in Greece. Although immigrants do not need to be tested for SARS-CoV-2 or quarantine, health officials will conduct random testing on tourists at the airport. The Greek authorities are developing detailed guidelines for this.

It is reported that the Greek government will classify immigrants according to nationality with red, orange, green and yellow according to the epidemic data such as the number of confirmed new crowns and the number of deaths, and then select flights on this basis to carry out random covid virus detection on passengers.

In the green category, for every 150 passengers, 1 to 2 people may be tested for SARS-CoV-2; in the yellow category, 5 to 10 people will be randomly detected; the orange category will detect 20 to 30 people. People and passengers in the red category will all be tested for new coronavirus.

In this regard, Athens International Airport and airports across the country need to employ a large number of staff and medical workers. The Greek authorities are planning to send teams to the airport as a unit. Each team will consist of doctors, nurses and officials of the Ministry of Civil Protection. If an immigrant has a positive test for SARS-CoV-2, it will be immediately quarantined, and its contacts will be tracked and quarantined.

Greek Minister of Tourism Theo Harris said in an interview that from 15 June, the first batch of tourists from 19 countries could only enter Greece through Athens International Airport.  International flights will resume operations.

Regarding the Greek people’s fear that there will be a large number of imported cases after opening the border, the Greek Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection Hadalias said that from 13 to 20 May, of the 21 flights and 2236 passengers arriving in Athens from abroad, only 1 passenger was diagnosed with the virus.

Hadalias said that the Greek Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Citizen Protection have not relaxed their vigilance, and the authorities will continue to take strict measures to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

On the other hand, according to data from the Greek Civil Aviation Authority, domestic and international passenger traffic at Greek airports decreased by 99% in April 2020. In April, only 37,273 passengers had flown in Greece, with a total of 5,032 flights. In April 2019, there were 37,471 passengers and 33,727 flights in Greece.

In April 2020, there were only 6,045 foreign tourists arriving in Greece. This number was 1,380,543 in the same period last year, a decrease of 99.6% year-on-year.
