Hong Kong's second covid wave has begun and the source of the epidemic in Tsuen Wan is unknown. On 13 May 2020, three new cases of SARS-CoV-2 were diagnosed, including the granddaughter who lived in Block 5, Zhuo Ming Building, Lei Muk Shue Village, Tsuen Wan, who had no external travel history. It was reported that the grandfather was initially diagnosed with covid late on 13 May while the 66-year-old grandmother who first developed the disease mainly came and went in the Yangwudao market, and the 5-year-old girl went to the tutoring club before the onset of illness and went to the grandmother’s house for dinner with more than 10 people on the eve of Mother ’s Day.

Zhang Zhujun, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Center for Health Protection, said that the source of the two grandchildren ’s infections is unknown, reflecting that the community has an invisible transmission chain. It does not rule out continued cases and even a large outbreak in the community. Collection of saliva samples are being carried out in the market, tutoring club and others who may be in contact with the two patients to test the virus.

A total of 1050 diagnoses and 1 suspected case have been accumulated in Hong Kong. The only imported case, a 34-year-old man was admitted to a quarantine center after returning from Pakistan. He had a fever the day before yesterday and was diagnosed yesterday.

The woman began to have a fever on 8 May. Due to physical discomfort, her 5-year-old granddaughter stayed at the 8th house of Furong Garden in Dajiaozui the next day and had dinner with more than 10 family members. The girl went to Tutor Co., "Sun Long Place", 289 Sha Tsui Road, Tsuen Wan on the same day and May 2 for a one-hour class with a teacher and a student. Three people wore masks throughout the course.

The woman stayed at home on weekends and rested. On Monday, she went to Mrs. Wu Ruoyu's general outpatient clinic to seek medical treatment. The next day, she submitted a sample of deep throat saliva to confirm the diagnosis. The girl also started coughing on Monday and was diagnosed yesterday. The girl and her mother went to the "Jin Man Ting" lunch in Olympian City one day before the onset of illness.

7 people from the family sent to hospital, at least 17 contacts must be quarantined

The two families have a total of 9 family members, 8 close contacts of the sixty-year-old woman, 4 of whom have symptoms, 7 have been hospitalized, including granddaughter, and 6 are negative for the virus. According to news, the woman's husband who was sent to Junyang Village for quarantine was initially diagnosed yesterday. The CHP traced a total of 17 close contacts of the girl child, including relatives and friends who had dinner together at the grandmother ’s house.

Although the woman developed the disease first, she was not sure who patient zero was.

Zhang Zhujun, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Center for Health Protection, said that the source of the infection of the grandmother and two grandchildren has not been found yet, reflecting that the community has an invisible transmission chain. She was asked if it was possible that two people returned to Hong Kong during home quarantine or after quarantine was completed. She confirmed that 2 people and 1 person in Lei Muk Shue Village and Zhuo Ming Building were in home quarantine, but they were not confirmed .

In addition to tracing and isolating close contacts to cut off the community communication chain as soon as possible, Zhang Zhujun said that he would expand the scope of the test and distribute deep-throat saliva sample bottles to the residents of Block 5 of Lei Muk Shue Village and Zhuo Ming Building where the two live, to detect viruses to understand the situation in the community or find out the invisible patients. The CHP will also arrange for people who may be in contact with the two patients to detect the virus, including meat stalls, vegetable stall staff, girls' tutors and classmates in Yangwu Road Market.
