The University of California Board of Directors passed without objection on 21 May 2020 that the admission application for 2021 no longer uses the SAT and ACT scores.
After a few hours of video-conferencing discussions on 21 May, the University Board of Directors finally passed the proposal by 23 votes to zero.
In the next two years (2021 and 2022), students can choose to fill in the SAT / ACT scores when applying for admission, that is, they can fill in or not fill out. They will not be penalized.
After two years of selective reporting, in 2023 and 2024, the Board will no longer consider SAT / ACT scores, but applicants can still report SAT / ACT scores for different reasons, such as applying for scholarships or applying for certain courses.
From 2025, the university will decide whether to use another test score to replace the SAT / ACT, or to abandon the SAT / ACT.
SAT and ACT standard tests have caused widespread criticism in recent years. Many studies have said that SAT / ACT discriminates against low-income and minority students.
It is generally believed that abolishing SAT and ACT is the beginning, and it is also the general trend for American universities to choose students in the future.
The University of California has 10 branches and 290,000 students, making it one of the largest public university systems in the United States.
