The drainage system of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has recently detected a "large amount" of the virus SARS-CoV-2 (covi, in short). Brazilian water quality experts warned on 15 May 2020 that if it continues to spread, the state of Rio de Janeiro and even the entire Brazilian drainage system may become a source of infection.

According to comprehensive media reports, a Cedae water supply and drainage company in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, recently reported that more than 400 employees were infected and 5 people died. The survey found that most of these diagnosed employees were workers in the sewage treatment area.

According to a survey report issued by the Cruz Foundation on 15 May 2020, a large number of covi were detected in Seda ’s drainage system in Niteroi, and the company was responsible for 92% of the Rio de Janeiro’s drainage services.

At present, the Federal Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Cruz Foundation, is investigating whether the sewage in other areas of Rio de Janeiro is also infected, and will formulate the next step of prevention according to the test report.

Some experts warn that only 46% of the sewage in Brazil is chlorinated before being discharged into the river. If this phenomenon spreads to all regions, the state of Rio de Janeiro and even the entire Brazilian drainage system may become a source of infection.

In addition, traces of the virus have been found in the wastewater of the Netherlands, the United States and Sweden. Professor Richard Quilum, a professor at the School of Natural Sciences at Stirling University and his colleagues, wrote in the British "Environment" magazine that although the focus of the prevention of covi is to prevent human-to-person transmission, a recent analysis of British sewage discharge shows that Drainage systems can also cause virus transmission.

According to statistics, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of covid in Brazil has risen to 220,000, surpassing Germany and France, ranking sixth in the world.
