Lianhua Qingwen produced by the People's Republic of China has been successfully registered as a Chinese patent medicine in China's Health Sciences Bureau and can be legally purchased in many countries. From the perspective of the specific composition of the drug, the main functions of the drug are to clear the lungs and clear the heat, detoxify and eliminate dampness. According to the current clinical research in PRC, it has a certain effect on the local light and common treatments of covid.

The approval of Lianhua Qingwen for sale listings in Singapore shows that the local public's trust and expectations of Chinese medicine are very high.

However, although many people in the world can easily buy this medicine, they cannot take it easily. In the case of incorrect medication, taking it may have a counter-productive effect. Not only can it not cure a patient, but it will reduce the patient's immune ability.

According to Li Minzhu, a Chinese physician in Singapore, an example is the ingredient Houttuynia cordata in Lianhua Qingwen Capsules, which by nature is slightly 'cold' and has various functions such as clearing heat from the body, expectorant and detoxifies and relieves cough. However, there are advantages and disadvantages, and "Famous Doctors" also states that exceeding the level of consumption of Houttuynia cordata can cause breathlessness. Therefore, people without covid should not take Houttuynia cordata in large doses for a long time.

Minzhu adds that if a patient's spleen and stomach are weak, or if the patient experiences cold or dampness, using Lianhua Qingwen Capsules alone may aggravate symptoms, and even result in diarrhea, poor appetite, and weakened digestive ability.

Lianhua Qingwen is patented to treat SARS, severe influenza and covid in the People's Republic of China. It has been accepted in many countries, excluding Sweden, Canada and the United States,  to treat covid.

"Lianhua Qingwen" claims to contain about 13 kinds of herbs, which have the effects of "curing viral inflammation" and "repairing cell damage".

However, documents from the Swedish Customs Administration show that after the customs laboratory analyzed the "Lianhua Qingwen" they found that the main ingredient of the drug is menthol, which is cool when eaten, and it is "not useful at all" for the treatment of covid.

Dan Larhammar, a professor of biology at Uppsala University in Sweden, said that unless there is evidence that the proprietary Chinese medicine is effective, it would be “immoral” to launch a market for this drug.

The Swedish Drug Administration has issued a warning to the public that there are no studies showing that "Lianhua Qingwen" is effective and "definitely not the drug we recommend."

In Canada, the controversy arose over Lianhua Qingwen because Neemay Li, an overseas Chinese student in Vancouver, boasted on YouTube two complimentary health packs of Linhua Qingwen Capsules and N95 masks that she received from the Consulate General Office of the PRC in Vancouver.

Jeda Boughton, a traditional Chinese physician in Vancouver who has practiced for nearly 20 years, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that Lianhua Qingwen is made from herbs such as forsythia, honeysuckle, and moxibustion ephedra. It is commonly used in Chinese medicine to treat "wind fever" like colds.

Zhao Zhongyuan, a former famous Chinese physician at Beijing Tianjiantang, said that among the pharmaceutical ingredients of Lianhua Qingwen Capsules, only ephedra is a bit 'warm', and the rest are all 'cold' medicines.

Zhongyuan said, "People with 'cold' bodies experiencing 'cold evils' attacking the lungs who eat the capsules frequently will become sicker. Without a dialectical treatment, Lianhua Qingwen will break the balance of the body's existing 'yin' and 'yang', so that the virus will take advantage of it and infect the body cells. Therefore, such an open sale of medicine is undesirable. If someone exploits the drug to earn money, it is to take advantage of the fire."

Li Minzhu remarked, "Only a Chinese medicine practitioner with solid basic skills in Chinese medicine diagnosis and good experience in clinical prescription medication can guarantee the safe use and efficacy of Lianhua Qingwen Capsules."

TCM doctors must seek out the causes of covid, find out the etiology and pathogenesis, establish the syndrome type, formulate the evidence, and make the treatment integrated, humanized, and meticulous, which are very distinctive features. For emergencies and severe illnesses, Chinese medicine emphasizes that patients should stop medication if they fall sick. Lianhua Qingwen is a specific prescription drug.

Kong Weiwei, Deputy Consul General of the PRC in Vancouver, who participated in the distribution of Lianhua Qingwen capsules to Chinese students, responded to Canada Ministry of Health that there is no cure for covid. He argued that international students are "not babies." "We cannot imagine ourselves like nannies telling everyone those capsules cannot kill SARS-CoV-2."

Chinese medicine is a complicated diagnosis and treatment system, and syndrome differentiation is the core of Chinese medicine treatment. Advise everyone not to use Lianhua Qingwen Capsule as a long-term preventive medicine for family use. If one is sick, go to see a doctor first to confirm the diagnosis. Let the doctor or physician decide what medicine to use and how to match the medicine with the cause of the sickness. It is safer.
